UVA Darden MBA Essay Tips and Deadlines [2026-2027], Class Profile
The University of Virginia’s Darden MBA program boasts the case-based learning method, which places students in the role of business leaders facing challenging situations. Students are active participants in this discussion-based approach, learning to make decisions in real-world scenarios. Darden is one of the largest case publishers in North America, and because of the school’s commitment to the case study method, a Darden student will examine hundreds of business cases over the course of their two years of MBA studies.
Darden’s application essays focus primarily on getting to know you and how you might affect the school’s overall community. It is interesting to note that Darden interviews a larger percentage of its applicants than many other top schools. At its best, the interview is literally a conversation about the candidate – their background, goals, and dreams. As you prepare your application, consider how you plan to build on this information when you get the opportunity to meet one-on-one with either an adcom member or a second-year MBA student.

Short Answer #1
Relationships Matter Here: What would you want your classmates to know about you that is not on your resume? (200 words)
Darden is one of the country’s smaller MBA programs, with just 361 students in its Class of 2027. As a result, every single student needs to be congenial and contribute a unique perspective to the class and community.
With the brevity of this essay, the hardest part might well be identifying the best topic(s) to cover. I suggest just one or two topics; the key will be to dig in and provide an anecdote and enough detail to really make your submission come alive for the reader. A potential topic might be a relevant formative experience or relationship, or a nonwork activity or passion. Ground your essay in example and detail. To select the best subject matter, consider your full application package, including the other essays, and think about what would really add to and further animate this holistic picture.

Careers with Purpose: At this time how would you describe your short-term, post-MBA goal in terms of industry, function, geography, company size and/or mission and how does it align with the long-term vision you have for your career? (200 words)
Darden’s prompt basically guides you through the requisite details the adcom wants you to provide. The opening, however, might have caught your eye and left you wondering what the school means by “at this time.” This is simply an acknowledgment that your career goals could evolve during your time in the MBA program. No one will hold you to the goals you state here, but those goals must be plausible and grounded in your experience and aspirations. Even with the tight word limit, I suggest contextualizing the requested information in a couple of ways. First, start with just a phrase or sentence indicating how the goal arose. In other words, what is its “origin story”? Second, express what you hope to accomplish – what impact you’d like to have – by pursuing and achieving your stated goals. These two elements together constitute your motivation, and that is what will help the adcom feel engaged by (and ideally invested in) your goals.

The best way to think about Darden’s additional comments prompt is that you should submit a response only if you need to clarify something in your profile or address what otherwise might leave a question mark in the adcom’s mind. For instance, if you were unable to ask your current supervisor to submit a recommendation on your behalf, provide some insight into why this was the case. Additionally, you might want to explain an employment gap on your resume. When you step back to review your application in its entirety before submitting, if all the pieces line up, you do not need to respond to this question.
Video Essay
You will have 90 seconds to respond to a randomly-generated question; we are looking for an authentic response that highlights your personality and critical thinking skills.
This video component plays an especially important role in Darden’s admissions process because the adcom wants to understand how you will show up in its case-based classroom, where professors will regularly call on you to share your thoughts and opinions on the case at hand. Once you receive your question for the video, you will have a mere ten seconds to get your thoughts together before delivering your 90-second response. The adcom does not expect a flawless, polished response, but they do expect you to be authentic and share your perspective based on your personal background and experience. Remember, the business school application process, including the interview, is additive, and your video response will provide another layer to your profile or vantage point on who you are.
