Harvard Business School 2+2 Program Essay Questions:

UPDATE: The tips for the HBS 2+2 2012 MBA Application are now available online. Please review the tips and post questions or comments to the new post.  Check out the entire 2012 MBA Application Tips series for more valuable MBA application advice.

The Harvard 2+2 application is online and the submission deadline is June 15, 2010. Harvard’s instructions and question are in black below; my comments and tips are in red:

HBS will accept either the GMAT or the GRE from 2+2 applicants. This year’s questions, are virtually identical to last years, as are my comments:

Required Questions:

1-What are your three most substantial accomplishments and why do you view them as such? (600-word limit)

This is practically Harvard‘s signature question. It has been around for years, and it goes to the heart of Harvard’s values. Harvard wants highly accomplished students entering its program. It wants leaders.

At least two of the three accomplishments should show leadership and/or teamwork with the emphasis being on leadership. I also like to have this essay show some breadth. My ideal would be to have one professional/internship, one community, and one personal accomplishment in this essay, but that breakdown is neither set in stone nor imperative.

2-What would you like us to know about your undergraduate academic experience? (400-word limit)

Optional for regular applications, this question is required for 2+2 applicants. When introduced, I thought this query was going to produce monotonous, boring pieces, but it didn’t. To my pleasant surprise, I reviewed several responses as part of our quality control program, and they were revealing, excellent essays. Your topics will clearly vary depending on your experience and the rest of your application, but my ideal answer will discuss a leadership experience from your undergrad career to show that you are a natural leader. Remember: HBS wants to develop leaders, not create them. It should complement your other essays and reveal another dimension to your personality and experience.

3-What have you learned from a mistake? (400-word limit)

People of initiative err. They must learn from those mistakes to be effective leaders. A friend went to her daughter’s graduation and quoted the valedictory address, “In school you learn lessons and then take tests. In life, you have tests and then learn lessons.” If you view your mistakes as experiments, lessons, or tests, you can grow and make sure you don’t repeat them. Show HBS through this essay that you are the kind of person who learns from your mistakes.

Again, preferably  have this essay reveal your mistake in a leadership role, and then applying lessons learned in a sphere of your life not covered by other essays. In the best HBS applications, each essay uncovers a different facet of the applicant and his or her experience. Together they paint a portrait of a dynamic, talented leader with initiative and exceptional ability.

Please also respond to one of the following (400-word limit each):

  • Discuss how you have engaged with a community or organization.

Harvard does not just want “engagement.” It desires leadership, impact and initiative. Look to team projects, sports teams, bands, clubs, and other organizational commitments where you have had impact.  Discuss your role and the results of your participation.

  • What area of the world are you most curious about and why?

The “why” part of this question is far more important than the “what.” In responding avoid boring declarative sentences like “I am most interested in Zimbabwe because…” Perhaps present symbols of the region, something personally meaningful to you that you can explain, or a story illustrating your interest to open your essay.

  • What is your career vision and why is this choice meaningful to you?

Harvard is one of the few, if not the only, top business school that has made the goals question optional. And even this one is a little different than the typical “What do you want to do and why do you want to do it?” The interesting twist to Harvard’s question is “career vision.” With Harvard’s focus on strategy, Harvard is asking you to develop your career strategy and discuss its importance to you. But don’t leave your answer on an entirely theoretical plane. Bring it down to earth with your plan for implementing that vision. In other words writing that you seek “a career leading an innovative enterprise, providing work-life balance, and allowing me the opportunity to contribute to my community” sounds great. But it will also sound a lot like other people’s visions. You need to have some idea of how to achieve that vision, define it more narrowly, and explain why it resonates with you.

For more on the concept of vision, please see “The Parable of the Three Stone Masons.” I believe that HBS is attempting to identify those who are like the third stonemason — perhaps with less religious fervor, but with well… that kind of vision. They are still working hard, with feet on the ground, but they radiate enthusiasm for a distant goal and pride in their ability to contribute to something much larger than themselves.

About Linda Abraham
  • akki

    Hi Linda
I plan to apply for HBS 2+2 PROGRAM.
I am a prospective third year student at the IIT Kharagpur(best undergrad univ in India). I have a present CGPA of 8.65/10 (top 8% of the university), which I can very well increase to 8.85 by the end of third year i.e by the time I apply. I plan to give my GMAT exam in the Jan’11.
Apart from having had an excellent academic performance(I have ranked under 100 All India in Talent Search Exams since grade 6th) since school days, I have held the post of Literary Secretary and hence responsible to the LLR hall of residence and the Technology Gymkhana(the largest Student related body of the institute). I have participated in many Case Study competitions (4 in number in the last 4 semesters) with commendable appreciation in 2 of them. Apart from this I have been an ardent reader of Goldratt books like The Goal, Thinking the TOC way etc. I have also been active debater and elocutionist and have won accolades in the same at Institute Level. I represent my hall of residence in cricket at the General Championships and have been a member of Gold and Silver winning Dramatics team in IIT Kharagpur.
Also, I have been involved for the last two semesters with the Rural Development Center and the National Social Service (NSS) Programme of IIT Kharagpur and have spent nearly 60 hrs in field work at nearby villages, learning about their problems, finding plausible solutions, teaching young school children etc.
Also, in my first two semesters, I was a National Cadet Corp and received the
    B-Certificate with a grade of Ex ( Outstanding ).

Please comment on my chances of making it to HBS and in what ways I can improve as one year is still ahead and I can take necessary steps.

    Thanks

    Akshat

  • Linda Abraham

    Akshat,

The information you provide is competitive for HBS 2+2. you seem to be active and to have participated in a lot of activities. To the extent you can assume leadership roles in a few of them, you will strengthen your application.

    Best,
    Linda

  • AKS

    Thank you Ma’am
I will try to act as per you advice.
    Thanks once again

    - 3 part-time jobs (research, campus tour guide, Olympics), 3 summer internships in biotechnology research, and other leadership extracurriculars

  • Linda Abraham

Al, if you are currently a rising junior entering your senior year, you have a competitive profile for 2+2. (I am wondering if you aren’t older based on some of your comments above.)

    Linda

  • Rohan Kumar

    linda,
I am a 3rd year engineering student at the National Institute of technology, Warangal ( A highly ranked tech school in india). I am pursuing chemical engineering but eventually want to go to a b-school. I haven’t taken the gmat yet and i want to know what would be a good time to take it to apply to the 2+2. I have an excellent extra curricular record as i have assumed leadership roles at both college and school levels. I have 7.5/10 gpa which is the only thing discouraging me from applying to the course. Your views on my candidacy would be greatly appreciated.

  • Linda Abraham

    Rohan,

I'm sorry it has taken me so long to respond. I was away.

I would take the GMAT as soon as you feel ready for it. I strongly recommend that you prepare before taking it, which should include practice exams.

Your GPA is competitive for the 2+2, but I can't really say more than that. You also need a good GMAT and a track record of leadership to be competitive.

    Best,
    Linda

  • V. Ganesa Murthy

    respected Linda,

I am pursuing my B.tech(computer science engineering) in SRM university(India's No.1 private engineering institution).

I am a state level Table Tennis player, and presently representing my university for the university level competitions.

Presently, I am in 5th semester, as my overall gpa is 7.5, which is the thing most bothering about me.

I have been an active member in the college activities,
and I have been the office bearer for my department in the university,

I am working for AIESEC(India's largest youth organization).

    Is
As I 2 years to complete my degree, In what ways could I improve my profile to get into HBS(2+2) program??

  • Anant

    Hi Ma'am,

I always had a dream to go to Harvard, but my past records have really demoralized me after viewing such accomplishments by others, I am currently in my Junior year in India.
I am pursuing B.Tech in Petroleum Technology from PDPU. My GPA is currently not really up to the mark but I am really working hard upon it. And I think I would get a decent GPA by the end of Junior year. I haven't done any so called "great" accomplishments in leadership too. But i just want to give my best shot to being accepted at HBS.
Can you advise me that should I opt for the 2+2 program or should I apply to the normal program or should I focus on my graduation first and then apply after getting some work experience. In the last case I can probably achieve some of those leadership activities and accomplishments needed to get in.
Moreover, what kind of leadership qualities and activities are required. And about the Letter Of Recommendation, would it be helpful to get one from where I've worked as an intern?
    So what is your suggestion?

    Thanks,
    Anant

  • Linda Abraham

    V. Ganessa,

Assuming leadership roles and responsibility, showing initiative, and earning stellar grades and GMAT score will all make you a competitive candidate for 2+2.

    Best,
    Linda

  • Linda Abraham

    Anant,

The 2+2 program is highly, highly competitive. If your grades are not excellent at this point, then I suggest you work on excelling during your remaining semesters in college, get a great job, and then apply after working for a couple of years.

Leadership comes in many shapes and sizes, but it usually requires assuming responsibility for something and motivating others to take action.

  • Anuj Shah

    Hi Linda,

I am currently pursuing my B.Tech at IIT- Bombay in Civil engineering. It has been my dream to do an MBA from Harvard and interested in the 2+2 to a large extent.

My current GPA is 8.91/10 and I am the topper of my Department (1st in 104 students). I am in the 2nd year of engineering and will be applying for the 2+2 in the april of 2012.

Work Experience : I have done a summer internship at Deloitte and have worked on several projects there.

Extra Curricular : I have attended various camps to enhance leadership skills and have also been awarded the outstanding boy of the camp in the senior camp (the last one). I have been an active member in the Entrepreneurship Cell at IIT-B and also with the marketing activities of Techfest (IIT-B Technical Festival which is the largest technical festival of Asia). I am also very interested in finance and have taken courses other than my major in finance and management.

I wanted you to currently evaluate my chances of making it into the 2+2 Program and also wanted some guidance regarding what kind of companies I should opt for in my future internships that would help me get an edge in the 2+2 program over my fellow counterparts.

Also, whose recommendation letters will be most effective in terms of evaluation at Harvard. As in from professors back in my college or from my employers at the internship that I will be pursuing in the 1 and a half year ?

What activities do you suggest I should pursue in terms of "community service" ??

    Waiting for your response eagerly.

    dear linda,
I am a law student and wish to apply for HBS 2+2.
I want to know how important is GPA in getting through.
    thanks

  • Abhimanyu

    Dear Linda,
I have an outstanding extra curricular and leadership record but my CGPA at the time of applying would be 7.1/10.
Do I have any chance of securing a seat at the HBS 2+2 program?

  • Linda Abraham

    Abhimanyu,

You probably have a small chance especially if your GMAT is strong and your college has a reputation for academic rigor, but don't set your heart on it.

    Linda

  • Anna

    Hi ma'm.

I am contemplating to apply for HBS 2+2 program this summer.
I am a 3rd year UG student of Jadavpur University,(among the top 10 technical institutes in India and 2nd best in research output) of Electronics & Telecommunication Engineering. My average undergrad CGPA is 3.68/4. I am actively involved in research activities. I have 3 conference papers(two already published) and a book chapter and a journal to my credit, presently and many more will be coming by the end of senior year. I presented the papers in international conferences and workshops. Besides,I am also involved in a joint project of IIM Calcutta & Wipro technologies ,on a telecomm research project, which started as a summer project. This summer I will be going to Brazil for a research project.I am among the top 10 students in the class and 1st among the girls.
Planning to give gre (target~1500) in march 2011. Besides I have many extra curricular activities to my credit.Part of universities's photography club (the most active club in the university),also serving as the outdoor and event manager of the club.Besides I also know foreign language like German and am planning to learn Portuguese. Besides I also participated in many quizzing and debating competions and represented the school in inter-school debate competitions and won several laurels in it.

Can you please suggest do i stand any chance of even getting called for an interview.Or I should rather drop the idea, because i am writing GRE so early only for applying for this program and is there anything I can do to improve my chances.
    Thanks
    Anna

  • http://www.accepted.com Linda Abraham

    Anna,

Yes, you stand a chance and are not wasting your time. It makes sense for you to try, based on what you wrote above. It makes no sense for you to count on an acceptance to HBS 2+2. so if you would find rejection devastating, then don't apply. If you would regret not applying more than possible rejection, I encourage you to apply. Obviously, if you don't apply, your chances of going are -0-.

    Regards,
    Linda

  • Anna

Thank Linda for the reply, and even more for the motivation. Just another question, is there anything i can do for demonstrating my leadership qualities more,or my research activities are good enough.

    Thank you
    Best regards,
    Anna

  • Linda Abraham

    Anna,

While research can imply thought leadership, b-schools are usually more interested in people leadership. When have you motivated, persuaded, and influenced others to follow a particular course of action?

    Hello ma'am
I had previously written about my inclination to apply to HBS (see Akshat)…I gave my GMAT and scored 720… How much effect does this score have on my chances?? Apart from that, how much does being Mentor and Co-ordinator of Intra-Institute events impact your leadership qualities??Please suggest further improvements..

  • AKS

Sorry but forgot to mention that I have been also selected for internship at Goldman S.Pls. comment abt my chances

  • AKS

    Ma'am
    Pls respond/comment abt my chances!!
    Regards
    AKS

  • Linda Abraham

    Akshat,

Your GMAT and internship are all competitive and help you. Your roles as mentor and coordinator also evince leadership so that is good too.

You are making the right moves to improve your chances for HBS 2+2, but you also need to understand that you can do everything, have high grades, good scored, great internships, and still not get into this program. Work towards, but don't set your heart on it.

    Best,
    Linda

  • Ma’am

    Thank You Ma'am
It was very insightful and pragmatically motivating. Ma'am i just wondered which other b-schools my profile seems competitive for ( as in strongly competitive, though as you say, i am just taking strides and not setting my heart on anything).
Any more suggestions about how to improve or how to go about the essays would be helpful.

    Thank you once again.

    Regards

    Aks

    Aks,

You should also consider Duke's and London Business School's Masters in Management program. Stanford has a program for applicants applying immediately after college graduation. It allows you to defer enrollment also. Please see http://www.gsb.stanford.edu/mba/admission/college_seniors.html . Yale has a similar program too: http://mba.yale.edu/MBA/admissions/apply/college_seniors.shtml .

  • Allison Ford

    Hi Linda,

My name is Allison and I am a junior at a well-recognized state school. However, I am on a five year plan and will not be applying to HBS for another year. I will be going abroad for two semesters next year. One program is a study abroad program through my university and the other program is an ambassadorial fellowship through Rotary.

I am a political science and international studies major and am very interested in the role that business can play in promoting development in countries and consequently mitigating the severity of various social and political problems. I have not taken the GRE yet, but judging on my practice test, I expect to have scores in the lower-mid range for HBS. I currently have a 4.0 and have been involved as a coordinator for several prestigious community service projects on campus and student government.

I will have studied abroad in four different countries by the time I apply to HBS and hope to make a strong case for my interest in business as a segway to international development. I was wondering how you feel about my changes at HBS and if you had any advice! Thanks.

  • Linda Abraham

    Allison,

It sounds like you have participated in some fascinating activities in college. I would encourage you to continue with your plans and especially in anything that allows you to show leadership.

I would also encourage you to take some business related quant courses, like statistics for business or accounting or economics, If you have the prerequisites, calculus may be helpful at least to show you can handle demanding math.

Obviously, your GRE/GMAT is a potential obstacle depending on if and how much it comes out below average. If it is low, its importance would be mitigated if you maintain your stellar grades and if your college has a reputation for low grade inflation and rigorous standards.

    Best,
    Linda
