Let’s take a look at this year’s U.S. News best engineering schools. These rankings are based on expert opinions about the quality of each program, as well as statistical indicators used to reflect the quality of a program’s faculty, research, and students. The reputation surveys were sent to academics and professionals in fall 2019 and early 2020.
In order to rank each school, U.S. News assesses the data for each quality indicator and then standardizes the value of each indicator about its mean. U.S. News consults with experts in the field and used their opinions to assign weights to each indicator.
After rescaling, the highest-scoring school received a score of 100. The remaining schools’ scores were then recalculated as a percentage of the top score. A score of 100 does not necessarily mean that the top engineering program receives the highest score on every indicator; it means the program received the highest sum of all indicators.
2021 Engineering ranking highlights
The top three schools remain the same as last year: MIT at #1, Stanford at #2, and University of California, Berkeley at #3. However, this year there is a three-way tie for the #4 spot: California Institute of Technology, Carnegie Mellon University, and University of Michigan, Ann Arbor.
