You may be the most dazzling, charming, and quick-thinking person in the world, but if you don’t actively prepare for your MBA interview, then you run the risk of drawing a blank and leaving your interviewer with a less-than-impressive picture of yourself.
The following 4 tips will help you prepare for the big day by bringing to the forefront of your mind some of your key qualifications, experiences, goals, and ideas.
- Know your qualifications. Your interviewer will probably ask a question or two about your strengths and weaknesses. You’ll want to prepare by thinking about which strengths and weaknesses you want to highlight and which ones you’d rather avoid. Make sure that when you identify a weakness, you’re able to talk about the ways in which you are actively working to overcome it. Back up your examples with stories.
- Know your experiences. You should be able to recite every detail on your resume by heart – this includes dates, positions, job responsibilities, skills, achievements, awards won, etc. Make sure that you can connect the dots between your past experiences, your qualifications for b-school, and your future goals.
- Know your goals. What do you want to do after you receive your MBA? How did you arrive at such a goal? Which experiences motivated you to pursue this dream? And finally, how will an MBA help you arrive at your final destination? Think long and hard about your answers to these questions – your interviewer will want to see that you’re a (wo)man with a plan, and that you’re also a reasonable and thoughtful person.
- Know what you are looking for. Your interviewer is going to be listening to your answers carefully to determine if you are a proper fit for the target program. Be sure that you can answer the following questions: Why is this b-school perfect for you? What is it about the program that attracts you? Why would the school be lucky to have you in its next class?
