Part 1: Career Aspirations

What is your short-term career goal, and how do you plan to leverage the Ross MBA and its program offerings in your first role after graduation? Please be specific and answer both parts of this question (300 words).

Ross wants to know that you have a clear, well-thought-out post-MBA plan and that you’ve done your homework on how Ross specifically will help you achieve it. This is not just a “Why MBA?” or “Why Ross?” question, it’s a strategy and school fit prompt.

Here’s how to approach this essay:

  • Start with clarity: State a concrete, achievable short-term career goal (e.g., “transition into healthcare consulting at a firm such as ZS Associates” or “join a big tech product team to work on AI-powered fintech products”).
  • Connect your goal to your past: Briefly show how your experiences so far have moved you in the direction of this goal.
  • Determine the skills you need to build: Reflect on the skills you need to strengthen or develop as you consider your goal.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the curriculum and student experience: Through your interactions with Ross community members, identify which parts of the program will address your skills gap. In addition to what you will learn in class, consider leadership or experiential learning opportunities that will support your skills development. You will want to convey why these parts of the program matter to achieving your career goals.
  • Make your essay Michigan specific: Avoid generic language; this is where researching the school really counts. Show the adcom that Ross is the best fit for you.

Part 2: Impact and Growth

Michigan Ross is proud to support a community of leaders and impact makers who value growth. As a future member of this community, we want to know more about who you are and what drives you. Choose one of the following prompts to tell us more about what makes you stand out beyond your academic and work experience. List the prompt you are answering at the top of your essay. (200 words)

  • Think of a time something important did not go as planned. What did you do next?
  • What is something you worked on for an extended period of time (over six months) that ultimately resulted in a positive outcome? What kept you committed?
  • Share an example of a specific situation when your actions created a positive impact on your community or an individual.

These three essay prompts (of which you need to respond to only one) delve into how you approach challenges, maintain momentum, and produce lasting change, and your response should focus on your growth in those areas. Ross wants students who will not only succeed individually but also enrich the community and lead with authenticity.

Here’s how to approach this essay:

  • Reflect on meaningful experiences that you have had “beyond your academic and work experience” and align them with one of the prompts. Identify which example to use as follows:
    • Consider how the example complements what you shared in your Part 1 essay.
    • Ensure that the example you share includes insights into how you grew as a result of, or throughout, the experience.
  • Be specific: Tell a story. Use vivid detail, and don’t be afraid to show vulnerability or passion. Use the STAR method (situation, task, action, result) to keep your essay on topic.
  • Connect your theme to Ross: Suggest how these qualities will shape the contributions you’ll make as a classmate, club member, and/or leader on campus. Specifically focus on how your classmates’ experience will be enhanced by your being part of the community.
