Chicago Booth MBA Essay Tips and Deadlines [2026-2027]

Chicago Booth has reworked its essay questions this year and now presents four prompts that allow for somewhat abbreviated responses of just 300 characters each. That amounts to roughly 40-60 words, which can be challenging. The four prompts cover your short- and long-term goals and seek to gain insights into what matters to you and who you are. Applicants who need to clarify or explain any aspect of their candidacy can do so in the Optional Essay, which has a 300-word limit. The application instructions indicate that you will enter your response into a text box, which means the system will not allow you to exceed the limit by even one character.

Ready to get to work on your Chicago Booth application? Here is some expert advice to help you get accepted.

Short Answer Prompt 1

What is your immediate post-MBA career goal? (300 character limit)

Following graduation, what position do you hope to attain? In this limited space, you must provide a plausible option that includes your target industry and function, and perhaps a company name or two. If location plays a role, include that information as well.

Short Answer Prompt 2

What is your long-term post-MBA career goal? (300 character limit)

When you share your long-term goal, think about where you want to be eight to ten years after graduation, and convey it in a way that connects it to your short-term aspiration. That said, it doesn’t need to be as specific as your immediate post-MBA goal. How will your short-term plans prepare you for your long-term plan? What activities or positions connect the two?

Short Answer Prompt 3

At Booth, we value the unique perspectives each student brings to our community. We want to understand your personality, your perspective, and what’s important to you.

Upload an image and explain its significance to you. (300 character limit)

In response to this prompt, you will identify an image that means something to you. Acceptable file formats are BMP, GIF, JPG/JPEG, PNG, and TIF/TIFF, which gives you some flexibility in what you can upload; you are not limited to submitting a photo. Explaining why the image is important to you helps the adcom understand what you value. When deciding which image to share, consider more than one, and ask yourself what each one reveals about who you are. Choose the image that will have the most impact while complementing the rest of your application.

Short Answer Prompt 4

Share a fun fact or something unique about yourself. (300 character limit)

This prompt offers you another chance to share an aspect of yourself that wouldn’t be found on your resume or included elsewhere in your application. Don’t shy away from presenting something funny or uncommon – if it leaves a positive impression and is interesting, feel free to share it.

Optional Essay

Is there any unclear information in your application that needs further explanation or additional details you would like to share with the Admissions Committee? (Maximum 300 words.)

The key to this essay is that it is optional. Given the brevity of the responses to the school’s short-answer prompts, we imagine that many candidates will be eager to provide the adcom with additional information about themselves. However, Booth is asking specifically for information that will explain something unclear, such as a drop in grades for a semester, a period of unemployment, or why your current supervisor is not writing your letter of recommendation.

Reapplicant Essay

Upon reflection, how has your perspective regarding your future, Chicago Booth, and/or getting an MBA changed since the time of your last application? (Maximum 300 words.)

The answer to this question is critical for MBA reapplicants, and it’s different from most reapplication essays in that it’s more about your perspective than what you’ve done. Chicago Booth wants to see growth and development. Use discretion when deciding what to share. It needs to be additive and show a maturation and evolution of your goals and reasons for wanting to attend Chicago Booth. Let it also reveal that you meet Chicago’s criteria better this year than last.
