INSEAD 2011 MBA Application Questions, Deadlines, Tips.

This INSEAD 2011 MBA Application tip post is one of a series of posts providing MBA application and essay advice for applicants to top MBA programs around the world. You can access the entire series at http://blog.accepted.com/acceptedcom_blog/tag/2011-mba-application-tips. My tips for answering INSEAD’s essay questions are in blue below.

INSEAD 2011 MBA Essay Questions

JOB ESSAYS

1. Please give a detailed description of your job, including nature of work, major responsibilities; and, where relevant, employees under your supervision, size of budget, number of clients/products and results achieved. (250 words)

Note the emphasis on quantifying results. Numbers speak volumes about the responsibility you have handled and the impact you have had. Also, while the description asks for major responsibilities, if you focus on achievements and accomplishments, you will reveal both your responsibilities and those occasions when you really shined.

2. Please give us a full description of your career since graduating from university. If you were to remain with your present employer, what would be your next step in terms of position? (250 words)

Don’t confuse “full description” with “complete history.” How would you characterize your career since college? You also have to answer the second part of the question and you only have 250 words. Choose the most important elements.

ESSAYS

1. Give a candid description of yourself, stressing the personal characteristics you feel to be your strengths and weaknesses and the main factors, which have influenced your personal development, giving examples when necessary. (400 words approx.)

For a question like this I recommend two strengths and one weakness. If you can choose one anecdote that reveals both the strengths and the weakness, you will have a strong essay. Don’t forget to discuss how these qualities influenced your personal development.

A word on weaknesses. Be honest without going overboard. Don’t make up a phony weakness. I attended an HBS info session a few years ago. One of the alumni said that he discussed a “phony weakness” in his essays (required for HBS that year) and his interviewer focused right on it, and basically said, “Come on. What’s a real weakness?” The applicant had to get real in a hurry. Take advantage of the essay: Give it some thought and respond with the benefit of that reflection. For more information, please see “Flaws Make You Real.”

At last year’s AIGAC conference one of the adcom members remembered that an applicant in response to a similar question had listed his weakness in “pitching new ideas in a meeting.” The adcom member felt that the applicant was specific, real, and showed self-awareness by revealing this flaw. In fact, by demonstrating these qualities in addition to the requested weakness that he was working on, the applicant actually enhanced his chances of acceptance with his response.

Don’t write about “weakness in pitching new ideas in meetings” as your weakness just because you read it here :-) It will become like the swine flu of MBA essays — an epidemic. However, you all have weakness. Now just be thoughtful enough and honest enough to reveal yours.

2. Describe what you believe to be your two most substantial accomplishments to date, explaining why you view them as such. (400 words approx.)

Try to take accomplishments from different arenas of your life. (But don’t go back to high school and earlier to do so.) The accomplishments should show impact, contribution, and for INSEAD at least one should have a multi-cultural flavor.

3. Describe a situation taken from school, business, civil or military life, where you did not meet your personal objectives, and discuss briefly the effect. (250 words approx.)

In choosing the situation, here’s a case when you can go back in time a little — let’s say 2-5 years. You can illustrate how you learned from this situation and were able to meet similar objectives next time around.

4. Discuss your career goals. What skills do you expect to gain from studying at INSEAD and how will
they contribute to your professional career. (500 words approx.)

This is a forward-looking career goals question. Use the past just enough to set context for your future and show that your goals are anchored in experience. Then explain how INSEAD with its intense, one-year, general management program and strong international focus will help you achieve your goals.

Not the specific focus on “skills” that you anticipate acquiring.  What do you anticipate learning and how will it help you achieve your professional goals.

5. Please choose one of the following two essay topics:

a) Have you ever experienced culture shock? What did it mean to you? (250 words approx.),

or

b) What would you say to a foreigner moving to your home country? (250 words approx.)

These two have been part of the INSEAD repertoire for several years. Choose the one that is easiest for you to answer and allows you to bring out a facet of your experience not found in the other essays. Keep it short, real short.

6. (Optional) Is there anything that you have not mentioned in the above essays that you would like the Admissions Committee to know? (200 words approx.)

Take advantage of the optional essay to give them one more reason to admit you. DON’T use it for a grand summary, a restatement of your other essays, or something similarly boring, superficial, and repetitive. Write a tight, focused essay highlighting something you haven’t yet discussed.

7. (Reapplicant) Your essay should state any new aspects of professional, international, academic, or personal development since your last application. We would also like you to explain your motivation for re-applying to INSEAD. (400 words)

Historically, INSEAD was tough on reapplicants. Hopefully this questions signals a greater openness to reapplication.

How are you a better applicant now than you were last time? What’s changed? INSEAD adds a twist by asking you to explain why you are re-applying. Why do you think you will get accepted this time if you didn’t last time? The answer had better not be that you’re counting on a decline in application volume to help you squeak in the Fountainbleau door. Again, how are you “new and improved” and why do you still want INSEAD?

  • Linda Abraham

    Jitendra,

Your high school grades are irrelevant when applying to graduate business school. Your college grades are competitive as is your work experience. You verbal score is low and could be an issue. That and a lack of international exposure make INSEAD a stretch program for you. You have a chance, but I am not optimistic.

    Best,
    Linda

  • Linda Abraham

    Salman,

Your undergrad GPA is a weakness, but the other elements of your profile are competitive. Give it a try.

Your essays are going to be critical. Please let me know if you want help. Our editor in Paris has worked with many Middle Eastern applicants to INSEAD.

    Best,
    Linda

  • Abhishek

    Linda,

It would be kind of you if you to comment on my credentials for an application at INSEAD.

    1. Low GMAT-670 (Q-49 / V-31 / AWA 5)
    2. B.Tech from IIT (7/10)
    >70% throughout the school level education
    3. 5+ years of work experience in operations/general management (manufacturing and energy sector)

    4. Led multinational teams to deliver technology services to oil companies mainly in India and on short term assignments in various other Asian countries.

    5. Worked in various community service mostly education related, freelance assignments in graphic designing.

I know the GMAT is on the lower side, I am trying my best to squeeze in time for another shot at GMAT. But if I cannot would be any sense to apply to INSEAD or the application would go straight in Recycle Bin.

    Thanks
    Abhishek

    Abhishek,

I don't think it would go straight into the Recycle Bin, but I think it would probably end up there eventually. :-/

  • William

    Hi Linda,

I've been lurking on this board for a while and have a question. I believe I have a competitive profile for INSEAD (740 Gmat, 3.7 GPA from a decent school, 4 years of work experience in finance and participated in a study abroad program and had a summer internship abroad). My question relates to my current situation. While I have 4 years of finance experience, I was laid off a little over a year ago. Since then, I've created and managed an e-commerce site for my family's business (I am interested in entrepreneurship more than finance and that is why I want to attend INSEAD, preferably in Singapore for the full year). It's been about a year and I've been generating about $450K in sales on the website. My question is, does this experience weaken my profile or strengthen my profile especially when my long term goal is to become an entrepreneur?

    Thanks,
    William

  • Linda Abraham

    Jamal,

The international nature of your work experience will appeal to INSEAD. You will need to explain some of the jumping around. Your GMAT is a little low, but if you have good grades, that could compensate. Basically, you have a chance, but should probably also apply to other programs to be on the safe side.

    Best,
    Linda

  • Linda Abraham

    Ivy,

    1) Your work experience is competitive at INSEAD; unfortunately your grades are below average and a significant hurdle.

    2) There is no number that will guarantee your competitiveness at INSEAD. But the higher the better.

    3) Can you get a rec from a different supervisor or from your previous work?

    Best,
    Linda

  • Linda Abraham

    Khalid,

Your chances of getting a scholarship are poor, but not nil.

    Best,
    Linda

  • Linda Abraham

    Karim,

If you do well on the GMAT, you will have a competitive profile for INSEAD.

    Best,
    Linda

  • Linda Abraham

    William,

It would strengthen it. You have the big bank, corporate experience. You now have the entrepreneurial experience that gives credibility to entrepreneurial goals.

    Best,
    Linda

  • Linda Abraham

I think INSEAD is a stretch and unlikely admit for you. Your GMAT verbal score will be an issue. Your work experience appears competitive, and I know nothing of your undergrad record or college, but I am concerned that given your intensely competitive demographic, your GMAT could sink your application.

If you really want to go to INSEAD and think you can raise your GMAT, I recommend a retake.

    Best,
    Linda

  • akp

    Thanks Linda.

  • Bri

    Linda,

Could you please comment on my chances of acceptance, and scholarship for INSEAD.

    Nationality: American
Age at start of program: 27
Undergraduate degree: US State School (3.3/4.0)
Masters Degree in Finance: European School (with distinction)
    CFA and CAIA charterholder
    GMAT: 690
Work Experience: Portfolio Management / Corporate Strategy for same company for 5 years – 1 year Amsterdam, 1 year London, and 3 years Hong Kong.

I've only taken the GMAT once, and didn't really have a chance to study – should I retake it?

    Many thanks!
    Maria

  • Linda Abraham

What were your percentile scores on the GMAT, Bri?

  • Bri

    78% and 80%

  • Linda Abraham

I wouldn't retake it if I were you. Obviously a higher GMAT is always nice and if you think you could easily raise it, give it a whirl. But you are from North American, a woman, and with impressive int'l work experience. I think your chances are good as is.

    Best,
    Linda

  • Bri

    Many thanks

    Thanks

  • Linda Abraham

    CJ,

Everything is competitive except the quant score, and that is important. If you can show through grades and work that you can do the math, you are a competitive applicant. You should be able to do so.

    Best,
    Linda

  • Linda Abraham

    Ronny,

I think INSEAD is a stretch and an unlikely acceptance. While your GMAT is highly competitive, your grades are lower than average as is your work experience, and it also lacks a serious international component. You should make the most of any international exposure, but I am not sure it will be competitive.

    Best,
    Linda

    Erdem,

Before I respond, can you give me context for your GPA. A 2.6 is normally a low GPA even in engineering. What percentage were you in your class? Top 10%? 20%? 50?

    Linda

  • Linda Abraham

    Jorge,

Everything you mention is competitive for INSEAD, except the lack of international work experience. Make the most of your travels and whatever multi-cultural exposure you have had.

    Linda

  • Erdem Demir

    Hello Linda,

    Thanks for your response.

I was 29th student in my class (out of 51)

  • Linda Abraham

    Erdem,

Everything in your profile is strong, except your undergraduate performance. They may decide based on the strength of your other qualifications, especially the GMAT, to overlook your GPA. But they could also say no because of your undergrad record, especially if they have other applicants with similar strengths and higher GPAs.

    Best,
    Linda

Other than your verbal score, your profile is competitive and impressive. Any chance you can raise the verbal? INSEAD is one of those schools that really looks at the GMAT scores separately and will take the highest of each.

    Hi Linda,
I am a 22 year old currently employed in a top Indain IT company.
    I hav scored
    88% in std X exams
    92% in std XII
    6.95/10 in Btech(Electronics & Communication Engineering)
I would like to pursue the MBA program in INSEAD and I am plannig to take GMAT in about 3 years time.
Considering my low CGPA and the fact that I am working in an IT company and would not be able to get much global exposure and mangagement related work,What all should I do inorder to ensure that I get admission in INSEAD.
    Kindly advice

    Regards,
    Mahesh

  • Linda Abraham

    Mahesh,

For INSEAD international exposure is critical. You may be able to get that exposure without working abroad, but working outside your home country really helps. Also, given that your GPA is a little low, your GMAT will be very important. You need an above average GMAT score for INSEAD.

On a minor note, INSEAD couldn't care less about your high school performance or scores.

More importantly, INSEAD will want to see leadership. If you job doesn't present opportunities for leadership, then seek them outside of work in community service, extra-curricular activities and sports.

    Best,
    Linda

    Thanx a lot Linda!

    hi Linda,
I have joined in an IT company(MNC) 5 months ago and is almost done with my training.Owing to my good perfomance in training,I have been given a choice of either working for the company's core research department(offered only to 5 people in a batch of 600) or for the education and reasearch wing(which involves training employees) or production(which involves coding, testing….tight deadlines…and is hectic)…..
Which one dou you think will be best for me as i plan to apply for insead or any MBA program after 4 years(yet to ake GMAT).
    Kindly advice me.

    Regards
    Nandan

  • Linda Abraham

    Amal,

With only two years of full-time work experience, a <700 GMAT, and no international exposure, I am sorry, but your chances at INSEAD would be poor.

If you really want to have a good chance at INSEAD, you should work for a couple of more years and try to gain both leadership and international experience. You should also try to have a GMAT where each section is 75% or more.

If you don't want to wait, look into Rochester Simon's MBA program.

    Regards,
    Linda

  • Linda Abraham

    Nandan,

For any MBA program, choose the option that will give you the most business exposure and opportunity for management/leadership in the next four years. I cant' tell which that would be. In addition, if you are specifically interested in INSEAD, choose the option that will leave the door open to working outside your home country or on multi-national teams..

    Best,
    Linda

If your GMAT is balanced, you have a competitive profile for INSEAD.

I'm not sure if it is better to apply as a Canadian or Pakistani. My guess is the latter, but try to find to how many applications INSEAD receives from Pakistanis and from Canadians. Go with the country that sends fewer applicants.

    Question:

how much gmat score will be ok for me to get into INSEAD?

  • Linda Abraham

    Sagar,

There is no figure that will guarantee your acceptance to INSEAD. In general, INSEAD wants to see 75% on each section of the GMAT and prefers to see 80% or more on each section of the GMAT.

    Best,
    Linda

  • Kim

    Hi Linda,

Just wanted to get a feedback on competitiveness of my profile for Insead Round 1 application.

    1) 27+; Female; Singaporean; born in India and living in the UK for last 10 years; multi-lingual 3 languages native, 1 intermediate and 2 basic

    2) Graduated from a top 5 UK university with a 2.1 degree in Law

    3) GMAT not taken yet; hoping for 700+ score – will a lower score eg 650+ make my application much less competitive?

    4) 5+ Years work experience (2.5 years M&A in London based investment bank, and currently 2.5 years investment management in a large UK pension fund); Flat team structure means that I do not manage anyone below me ie still the most junior in the team

    5) Extracurricular activities: very active at university (5 years ago); somewhat less active now – is it acceptable to use examples from that far back in my essays?

    6) Just about to launch my own e-commerce business

    7) Good recommendations; but would prefer to use peer recommendations, or that of those just slightly more senior, as I am not in a position to disclose application to my supervisor/ boss – what impact will this have?

Would appreciate any insignt on my profile, and what I can do to make it more competitive,

    Many Thanks
    Kim

  • Kim

As an addition to qn above, the 2.1 grade in law (undergrad) basically is between 60% – 70% . 70% upwards is the highest grade, and awarded to top 3% per year generally for essay based subject in my university.

My grades are at average of 63% – not sure how this compares to the GPA system, but is this something to worry about?

    Thanks
    Kim

  • Linda Abraham

    Kim,

    To answer your questions:

    3) In general, INSEAD likes to see 75% on each section of the GMAT and those figures are more important than the total score. Obviously, the total is related to each part, but you get the idea. A 650 is below average for INSEAD.
    5) It's better to use more current examples, but if you don't have them, use the older ones.

You are probably better off to go with more senior bosses than with peers if you can not ask your immediate superior. provide brief explanation, but that is not a problem provided the recommender knows you well enough to write a substantive letter.
The 63% is perhaps a little bit low,but if combined with a competitive GMAT shouldnt be a problem.

    Best,
    Linda

  • INSEADer

    Hi Linda,

What is your take on a GMAT score score of 700 with a 92% in Verbal and only 68% in Quant? Does the fact that I am an engineer with many math courses as part of my degree which I scored A+ in help me cover by 68% in quant?

Should I address this in the optional essay?

Also, is it better to polish up the rest of my application and apply in round one or rewrite the GMAT and apply in round 2?

    Thanks!

  • topman

    Hi Linda,

Many thanks for your help here.

Does it make sense to use the optional essay to talk about my spouse and how his international exposure and profession completes me?

  • Linda Abraham

    INSEADer,

The best approach would be to retake the GMAT, get a better score, and if necessary apply R2. That way you don't have to rely on INSEAD overlooking your GMAT. With a better score, you will simply be able to present excellent credentials. You have the time.

    Best,
    Linda

  • Linda Abraham

    Topman,

I would need to know more, but since you're the applicant and not your spouse, I don't think talking about his achievements will help you in the admissions process.

    Best,
    Linda

  • INSEADer

    Thanks Linda.

I do have 2 years of professional internship and 5 years of post-grad experience. Do you still think I need to re-write the GMAT (as it will still be a major focus)?

I would really prefer to apply now given I have most things lined up for R1. I just checked and even if I erite the GMAT this weekend, INSEAD will not get those scores in.

I will wait if you feel that my application will be weak now due to the 68% in quant.

Also, I have heard of this 're-take the GMAT' letter. Does the adcom at INSEAD still do that? And when they do, do they ask you to re-take and re-apply or just re-take and send the scores?

    Thanks!

  • http://www.accepted.com Linda Abraham

    INSEADer,

I just feel it's safer to improve that quant score. I know that's not the answer you want. It's possible that given your grades and quant background, they will overlook the 68% quant. It's also possible they won't. Consequently, I just think it's safer to retake, unless you think you will be unable to raise the quant score.

I am not sure what you mean by a "retake the GMAT letter" so I can't respond to that.

    Best,
    Linda

  • INSEADer

    Thanks again Linda!

I could just write the GMAT 2 weeks out, include the score in my application (if it is better than last time), request the score be sent to them (after I have seen the score), and still apply at the end of this month. Will that mean that they will not see my application until round 2? (Want to assess if my logic is flawed)

Also, say I am not able to improve my score, should I address it in the additional essay? Basically pointing them to my undergrad results as proof?

On a side note, the 're-take the GAMT letter' I was referring to is something I picked up on other blogs where some candidates with strong profiles but bad GMAT score were requested by the adcom to re-write the GMAT by a certain date. Guess it does not happen any more.

    Thanks!

  • Linda Abraham

    INSEADer,

You have to check with INSEAD on this question. Most schools (but not all) will consider a GMAT score submitted after the due date if they have not already reviewed your application. If they reviewed it, they will not re-evaluate based on the new score. Some will not consider a new score submitted after the deadline, and I'm not sure what exactly is INSEAD's policy on this question.

    Best,
    Linda

  • Scott

    Hi Linda,

I have a similar situation as INSEADer:

    GMAT 1: 670 (V:92% Q:60%)
    GMAT 2: 680 (V:92% Q:62%)
3.3/4 GPA at a top US uni, major int. political science/econ
5 yrs exp at MNC – IT project/product mgmt
    multi-lingual
Int exp. consists of projects with multiple international team members, 3 mo. int assignment Singapore, 3 mo. teaching in china, travel to 20+ countries
Extracurriculars include probono work for nonprofits

I'm concerned about the quant score, but am unsure if I can raise it given another test attempt. To mitigate, I'm taking a business stat class. Do you think I have a chance w/ the current GMAT in R1 or do I need to wait until R2 and attempt another retake?

    Thank you!

  • Linda Abraham

    Scott,
The difference between you and INSEADer is that you have already retaken it with only a marginal improvement.

If you don't believe you can raise it, I would plow forward. If you think you can raise it, I would wait.

Everything else looks good. If you (or anyone else) would like help with your essays, please me know. (http://bit.ly/i7g59w )

    Akshay,

Thanks for your posts. You have a competitive profile for INSEAD.

    Best,
    Linda

  • Felipe

    Linda,

I would really appreciate your assessment on my application.

GMAT- 690 (Q.45-72%/V.39-88%) – I have studied for 2 weeks but I believe I could raise my score. Should I retake it?

Brazilian, civil engineer (80th percentile of the class), 28 years old by jan 2012, 4 years of working experience, mostly in Management Consulting and Private Equity.

I have a good number of international travels and one working experience abroad for 3 months (Chile and Argentina).

I have also an history of surpassing expectations, being raised in a small city and, with schoolarships, I ended up in one of the most prestigous engeneering schools of the country.

    Thank you for your attention.

    Regards,

    Felipe

  • Linda Abraham

    Felipe,

You're on the cusp. Certainly if you got your quant score over 80% that would be better, but you're not so far from it and you have an engineering degree, lots of good quant grades, and strong work experience. If you believe you can easily raise it, then do so. that's the safe route. If retaking the GMAT would not be so easy or if it would take away from other aspects of your application preparation, then I'm not so sure.

    Best,
    Linda

  • Felipe

    Linda,

Thank you very much for your answer!

I'll retake my Gmat (I believe I can easily surpass my previous quant score).

It is really helpful to hear from experienced people in such important subject which is our MBA at Insead.

    Regards,

    Felipe

  • Linda Abraham

    Felipe,

Thanks for the feedback. Good luck with the GMAT and your INSEAD application!

    Many thanks,
    Carol

  • Linda Abraham

    Carol,

The information you provide is competitive for INSEAD. Obviously, you will need your GMAT to be competitive too.

FYI, we will have a Q&A with INSEAD on May 18 at 10 AM Pacific Time.

    Best,
    Linda

  • Tara

    Hello Linda,
Thank you for all the informative replies you have been giving out.Could you take a look at my profile and let me know if its competitive enough for INSEAD?

Double major from a top 5 Indian university ( Bachelors in Engineering, Masters in Chemistry), 3.05 /4 GPA

    GMAT score of 700 (V 44 / Q 42)

6 years work experience in an oilfield services company, in India and in the US. Training courses attended in 5 other countries.

Took a 1 year leave of absence for personal reasons + maternity leave.Would this prove to be a problem?

Am fluent in 4 languages, not many extracurricular activities now, can get strong recommendations from my workplace (superiors and colleagues), and can exhibit "extras" done at work(other than my assigned job profile).

I am very interested to know what you think?

    Thank you,
    Tara.

  • Linda Abraham

Your maternity leave would not be an issue. You have unusual work experience and you language abilities are certainly valued.

I am concerned, however, about your GMAT quant score and your GPA, both of which are a little low for INSEAD. Any chance you could raise the GMAT?

    Linda

  • Richa

    Hello Linda,

One primary aspect of my profile is my association with a urban widlife protection organization for the past 3 years.I have been actively involved with them and have worked in various roles.I am also an amatur photographer and have won various prizes for my captures.
What do you think are my chances at INSEAD?

  • Linda Abraham

    Richa,

Assuming you have strong grades, your success is going to hinge on whether you can convince INSEAD that you have a global perspective and multi-cultural exposure. This is going to be difficult if you have never left India. Perhaps your management experience will do it,but it won't be easy and consequently I am not optimistic.

    Best,
    Linda

    Hi Linda,

I am planning to pursue MBA at Inseada in 2012..Can you please let me my profile can be considered.

My extra curricular activities include dance shows ,working for red cross society. Can you tell me how much score I need to have in GMAT to make my profile competitive

    Thank You.

  • Linda Abraham

    Kiran,

International exposure is an important element of a competitive INSEAD application. If you don't have it, I don't think your application will be competitive regardless of your GMAT score.

    Best,
    Linda

    Hi Linda,

I am a 30 year old Tibetan woman from Nepal, with a BS and MA in Economics from a US university with 6 years of experience in 3 fortune 500 firms- Spanning telecommunications to energy. Currently role as a senior analyst in the energy sector, I work in a business development role with projects around the world. Full scholarship at undergrad and graduate school.

Prestigious internship at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington DC for a year.

I speak 5 languages- Nepali, Tibetan, Hindi,Bengali, English.

I also spent 5 years in India for secondary schooling.

I took the GRE instead- Q is 92nd percentile and V is 75th.

Is the GRE regarded equally to GMAT or should I take GMAT?

What are my chances at INSEAD

  • Sonam

    Graduate GPA 3.4/4

Past roles: Market strategy for a major telecommunication merger project. Brand management rotational program in a renowned US retail brand.

  • Sonam

Linda, your advice has helped out so many students. Thank you so much! Your comments are greatly appreciated!:)

  • Linda Abraham

    Phillip,

Sorry, but I am not optimistic. The combination of below average grades and a below average (for INSEAD) GMAT are the reasons I am pessimistic. Yes they will consider circumstance, but I think INSEAD considers it less than some other programs, and again, the combination of low GMAT and GPA is going to make it hard to overlook the GPA.

    Best,
    Linda

  • Philipp

Thank you for your feedback, Linda!

But, inversely, do you think if I'd be able to increase my GMAT (above 700 or 720) my vita is "competitive" enough?

    Thanks again :)

    Best,
    Philipp

  • Sonam

    Linda,

Any advice for me? Thanking you in advance!

  • http://www.accepted.com Linda Abraham

I'm assuming you had good grades as an undergrad and consequently believe you have a competitive profile for INSEAD.

Your GRE is competitive. It actually is debated whether the GRE has the same credibility as the GMAT. Assuming your undergrad grades are solid and given your excellent work experience adn competitive GRE, I wouldn't recommend taking the GMAT.

    Best,
    Linda

  • Jenna

    Hi Linda

Please could you asses my application profile (I am looking to apply for Sep 2013 intake):

    - Schooling in India
    - 2.1 B.A (Hons) Finance from UK university
    - CFA Level 1 Passed, Going to appear for the remaining 2
    - Just started work at Bloomberg in Analytics department in Singapore
    - considerable independent travel as part of a gap year (Spain, France, Italy, East Coast USA, India)
    - hobbies include Sailing, Swimming
    - Volunteer for the World Wildlife Fund
    - currently studying for GMAT
    - Fluent in English, Hindi, Intermediate Spanish and Conversational Mandarin

Bit concerned about the lack of work experience? Also, not sure about what qualifies as the second language requirement
Would appreciate your thoughts and ideas on what I can do to improve my chances of getting in.

    Many Thanks.

  • Linda Abraham

    Jenna,

Given that you just started working, you would probably improve your chances if you wait an additional year and aim for Sept. 2014 intake.

    To further improve your chances at INSEAD, * Seek out international opportunities, as you have done in the past;
    * Improve your Mandarin or Spanish. it sounds like you are well on your way there.
    * Assume leadership roles on and off the job.
    * Maintain at least some of your hobbies and community service commitments.

Regarding INSEAD's language requirements, please see http://mba.insead.edu/admissions/languages.cfm .

    Best,
    Linda

  • Sarah

    Dear Linda,

I have a quick question – I have a law background, and have worked outside my home country for a number of years. I would like to apply to BSchool for a 2013 intake. My work experience has involved a mix of large corporate and small boutique firms – does the fact that I have worked for (and currently am working for) a small law firm without an international name hurt my chances of acceptance to INSEAD or similar institutions?

    Thanks,
    Sarah

  • Linda Abraham

No. Your accomplishments will count far more than your firm's size. What you have actually done while working for your firm is what counts. If you have had international exposure and can demonstrate significant professional growth, then your work experience will be viewed as competitive at INSEAD. Obviously, you need all the other "stuff" to be admitted.

    Best,
    Linda

  • Edwin

    Dear Linda,

I am looking at the 2013 Jan intake.

    Basic profile:

    Singaporean, m, 29
Work experience: 1yr in Sg, 4yrs in HK (now in HK)
International exposure (work-wise): Mainly HK and PRC
Field: 5yrs Corporate Finance by end-2011, m&a (corporate finance)
Compaa ny: boutique corporate finance firm. a HK-listco (not a major investment bank though)
Leadership: Served 2.5yrs military (national service). promoted to Officer-grade
Grad: Not fantastic. Monash University, Melbourne Australia (close to 70% avg.) Honours (2nd lower though), studied in Australia for 5 years.
GMAT: Taking in the coming months.
CFA: awaiting CFA lvl 2 grades currently.

Would INSEAD consider a Singaporean with HK exposure, looking to return to Sg for studies? My aim to seek job opportunities in an international investment bank after bsch and move overseas again.

  • Edwin

    Dear Linda,

Just to add. I am confident of getting good reference letters to strengthen my leadership qualities at work. My weaker areas could be my academic hist and perhaps, company-size. I hope a strong GMAT score + CFA qualification make my application a lot more competitive. Would there be other concerns?

  • Linda Abraham

    Edwin,

You have a competitive profile for INSEAD. I don't think they will question the quantity of international experience, but you will need to show what you learned from it and a global mindset. I don't think you will have to strain to show it.

    Best,
    Linda

  • Edwin

    Dear Linda,

Yup! I have an answer to that. Many thanks! Your advice is greatly appreciated.

  • Linda Abraham

    You're most welcome!

    Hi linda,
I am from Turkey- Male.Graduated from Electrical Eng. gpa- 2.44 and master degree Engineering Management with gpa 3.8(accounting,statistics,finance,economics All A's)
Got Gmat 760(q51). I am working as procurement engineer for 2 years(have not work at abroad but working with vendors from 10 countries- the nature of my work is very international) and will have 3 years work experience when program starts in 2012.I am considering to apply first round this year but as you can see from my profile I have low gpa(lots of failed classes) but excellent master gpa and GMAT. I have not also worked abroad and will have only 3 years exp. when prog. starts but nature of my job is very international and involved in serious project management roles in my job so far. What do you think about my chances at INSEAD?I really need your sincere comments Thank you

  • Linda Abraham

    oprtytr,

I thought I had responded and clearly have not.

In anycase, I am concerned about your undergrad GPA and short amount of work experience, which for INSEAD is on the light side. WEre there any extenuating circumstances that contributed to the low GPA? Obviously your GMAT is excellent.

I am not optimistic, but I also acknowledge that acceptance to INSEAD is not impossible. If you apply now to INSEAD, then also apply to other programs where your chances are better. If you wait a year or two, I think your chances would be better an INSEAD.

    Best,
    Linda

    QZ,

    Thanks for the feedback.

"No chance" is a little strong in my opinion, but your chances will improve dramatically if your GMAT score is over 75%in both verbal and quant.

  • sp279

    hi linda,
i'm considering applying to INSEAD and was wondering if i should even bother.

    age: 32
    sex: female
origin: of Indian descent, but born and brough up in the U.S.

mechanical engineering major from a top 10 U.S. University.

gpa: 2.4/4.0 (my biggest downfall, i know)

    gmat: yet to be taken

    work history:

1)Technical Leadership Program at General Electric Transportation Systems — led projects on emerging diesel engine technology with vendors from india and germany
2)Product Development/Project Manager at Tiffany and Co. handling complete manufacturing processes for all Statement Jewelry lines, valuing over $300M. Dealt with vendors and suppliers from all over the world
    3) Currently a Project Manager at major U.S. Utility company managing numerous multi-million dollar projects at coal-fired power plants around the state.
    4) Mother to two amazing children :)

languages: fluent in English, Telugu, and Spanish

i know it's a long shot, especially with my undergrad grades, but do you think developing an alternate transcript (i.e. taking relevant business courses now and building up a solid GPA) will help?

also, will my age be a factor against me for admissions?

    thanks so much!

  • brahms

    Hi Linda,

I am applying for INSEAD. My profile is Turkish male 29 y.o., 710 GMAT, 2,8 GPA in Management, 6 years work experience in non-profit (chambers of commerce type organisation), Turkish native, fluent in english, french and russian. I lived 6 months in Belarus)

My first question is as everyone how would you evaluate my profile?

And second: I have been to abroad many times (to Georgia, to Europe many times, to USA, to Morocco, to UAE) for business trips, duration of those trips were less than a week. Should I name and explain them in the international exposure part of the application file? Or trips that short simply do not count? Also I have recently spent 2 weeks in Kiev as a part of my vacation. Should I include that too?Thank you very much

  • sp279

    Linda,
In addition to what I stated above, I should add that my international experience, aside from working with global vendors is mainly with my extracurricular activities as a classical indian dancer. I have travelled all over the US, Europe and Asia as part of a dance troupe, and have organized numerous performances, workshops, and conferences. This, in part, contributes to my relatively low GPA in undergrad (alot of time spent dancing!).

  • Linda Abraham

    sp279,

Well, you definitely would be a long-shot, but your work experience is compelling. You have the international exposure that INSEAD values. And a lot will ride on your GMAT, which you have yet to take. I think that if you had a strong, above average GMAT, a few recent As, and provided context for your poor undergrad performance you might have a shot, but it would be unwise for you to count on INSEAD. You would also need to apply to other programs that might be more forgiving of your undergrad record (or enchanted by your kids!).

    Best,
    Linda

  • Linda Abraham

    Brahms,

A 2.8 is a below average GPA for INSEAD in US terms. If your school had a harder grading scale, INSEAD would know about it and then your GPA may be competitive. The other elements of your profile are competitive.

Regarding your international travels, everything "counts." What's going to make one element more persuasive than another isn't the length of the trip, but the insight and lessons you learned from your trips and travels.

You might want to review the recent transcript with Kara Kennan of INSEAD at http://www.accepted.com/chat/transcripts/2011/mba05182011_insead.aspx .

    Linda

  • brahms

    Dear Linda,
Thank you very much for your help. You are the best. May I ask for your help in this GPA issue too?

I have read couple of interviews of INSEAD people. There were no remarks of gpa but the quality of the school is emphasized and it was said that people from different backgrounds have a little higher chance. My school is the top school in Turkey and it was a demanding one, however obtaining a high gpa was not hard in my major, actually it was a piece of cake. I do not think my gpa would be considered as competitive. I was planning to ignore this issue, I am more comfortable like that, hoping that a somewhat unconventional background would save me from one old shortcoming. However while browsing forums and reading your comments I have realized that a top school deserves always the very best ?
So, should I try to address the gpa issue? I have a hardluck story, father had an illness then bankrupted and I found myself without necessary financial means to graduate from the university. I had worked at cafes and bars mostly and did not care much about school since coming up with the tuition seemed impossible. Instead I played a card game called bridge, which happens to be a mind sport, extensively all around Turkey. All my tournament expenses were covered by the national bridge federation since I was one of the 10 candidates for the youth national team. After couple of years (when I am around 21) I grow up, realized this is going nowhere and asked for help, and people helped, I found some need based scholarships, returned to school and graduated. I loved finance courses whose average makes 3.85. And after MBA I plan to pursue a carrier in finance.
What do you think should I mention this, or some part of it?
    Thank you

  • Linda Abraham

    Brahms,

    Thanks for the gracious feedback.

I definitely think you should mention the circumstances that contributed to your low GPA, especially you father's passing, the financial impact, and your need to work to support yourself.

    Hi Linda,

I am hoping to be an INSEAD applicant in a few years. As it currently stands, I am finishing the last year of my undergraduate degree in Electrical Engineering from Canada (Memorial University of Newfoundland).

My GPA at the time of graduation is looking like it will be about a 3.0 (With a vast improvement in my last year thus far). I know this is a little low, however I'm looking to do whatever is necessary to mitigate this by the time my application rolls around.

I've already began to study for the GMAT and intend to do better than the school average to compensate.

    Anyway to summarize myself:

    1) a 24 year old, white male (my degree is 6 years long because it's a Co-Op program with work terms).

    2) Extracurricular activities currently include being involved with Toastmasters and being a former national level sprinter. I'm currently training in triathlon and intend to complete an Iron Man within the next 4 years.

    3) For volunteer experience, I'm currently volunteering with a cancer treatment center outside of less steady sources, like volunteering at triathlons and assisting with the organization of various events.

    4) Since I'm still doing my undergraduate degree, my work experience outside of work terms is effectively nothing as far as admissions would see. However, it seems that I may have a job offer from an international consultancy, engineering and project management company (AMEC). Since it seems like INSEAD values global experience above all else, are there any recommendations you would have which would enhance my application? Would you recommend applying to overseas jobs as they came up to get global exposure, or should I stick with the job I'm given and instead focus more on promotions from there?

I realize this is a long post and I apologize, however I'm trying to plan out the next few years of my life to ensure that I have the most competitive application possible. Thank you very much for your assistance and all the best.

    With regards,
    Blaine

    Blaine,

Thanks for your post, and congrats for planning ahead.

As you have identified, your grades are a weak point in your application. To the extent you get high grades now and pull that average up, the better off you will be. An above INSEAD-average GMAT, as you know, will also help you.

If you want to attend INSEAD, which prides itself on being a global school, global exposure is critical. So yes, seek out assignments in other parts of the world.

If you do not currently speak two languages, start learning a second language. It is an INSEAD requirement for entrance, and a 3rd language is required for graduation (but not fluency in the 3rd.)

Finally, if you can take on leadership roles, they will also help you.

Businessweek has an excellent series for applicants planning to apply five years from now. It begins at http://www.businessweek.com/bschools/content/nov2008/bs20081125_092698.htm .

    Best,
    Linda
