INSEAD 2010 MBA Application Questions, Deadlines, Tips.

UPDATE- The tips from INSEAD’s 2011 MBA Application are now available online. Please post questions or comments to the new post.

INSEAD 2010 (Sept) MBA Essay Questions

My comments are in red:

JOB ESSAYS

1. Please give a detailed description of your job, including nature of work, major responsibilities; and, where relevant, employees under your supervision, size of budget, number of clients/products and results achieved. (250 words)

Note the emphasis on quantifying results. Numbers speak volumes about the amount of responsibility you have handled. Also, while the description asks for major responsibilities, if you focus on achievements and accomplishments, you will reveal both your responsibilities and those occasions when you really shined.

2. Please give us a full description of your career since graduating from university. If you were to remain with your present employer, what would be your next step in terms of position? (250 words)

Don’t confuse “full description” with “history.” How would you characterize your career since college? You also have to answer the second part of the question and you only have 250 words.

ESSAYS

1. Give a candid description of yourself, stressing the personal characteristics you feel to be your strengths and weaknesses and the main factors, which have influenced your personal development, giving examples when necessary. (400 words approx.)

For a question like this I recommend two strengths and one weakness. If you can choose one anecdote that reveals both the strengths and the weakness, you will have a strong essay. Don’t forget to discuss how these qualities influenced your personal development.

A word on weaknesses. Be honest without going overboard. Don’t make up a phony weakness. I attended an HBS info session a few years ago. One of the alumni said that he discussed a “phony weakness” in his essays (required for HBS that year) and his interviewer focused right on it, and basically said, “Come on. What’s a real weakness?” The applicant had to get real in a hurry. Take advantage of the essay: Give it some thought and respond with the benefit of that reflection. For more information, please see “Flaws Make You Real.”

At the recent AIGAC conference one of the adcom members remembered that an applicant in response to a similar question had listed his weakness in “pitching new ideas in a meeting.” The adcom member felt that the applicant was specific, real, and showed self-awareness by revealing this flaw. In fact, by demonstrating these qualities in addition to the requested weakness that he was working on, the applicant actually enhanced his chances of acceptance with his response.

Don’t write about “weakness in pitching new ideas in meetings” as your weakness just because you read it here :-) It will become like the swine flu of MBA essays — an epidemic. However, you all have weakness. Now just  be thoughtful enough and honest enough to reveal yours.

2. Describe what you believe to be your two most substantial accomplishments to date, explaining why you view them as such. (400 words approx.)

Try to take accomplishments from different arenas of your life. (But don’t go back to high school and earlier to do so.) The accomplishments should show impact, contribution, and for INSEAD at least one should have a multi-cultural flavor.

3. Describe a situation taken from school, business, civil or military life, where you did not meet your personal objectives, and discuss briefly the effect. (250 words approx.)

In choosing the situation, here’s a case when you can go back in time a little — let’s say 2-5 years. You can illustrate how you learned from this situation and were able to meet similar objectives next time around.

4. Discuss your career goals. What skills do you expect to gain from studying at INSEAD and how will
they contribute to your professional career. (500 words approx.)

This is a forward-looking career goals question. Use the past just enough to set context for your future and show that your goals are anchored in experience. Then explain how INSEAD with its intense, one-year, general management program and strong international focus will help you achieve your goals.

5. Please choose one of the following two essay topics:

a) Have you ever experienced culture shock? What did it mean to you? (250 words approx.),

or

b) What would you say to a foreigner moving to your home country? (250 words approx.)

These two have been part of the INSEAD repertoire for several years. Choose the one that is easiest for you to answer and allows you to bring out a facet of your experience not found in the other essays.

6. (Optional) Is there anything that you have not mentioned in the above essays that you would like the Admissions Committee to know? (200 words approx.)

Take advantage of the optional essay to give them one more reason to admit you. DON’T use it for a grand summary, a restatement of your other essays, or something similarly boring, superficial, and repetitive. Write a tight, focused essay highlighting something you haven’t yet discussed.

  • Linda Abraham

You want to have a GMAT that greater than or equal to the 80% on the quant and on the verbal. The separate percentile scores are more important for INSEAD than the total.

I am not sure how low is "somewhat low," which makes it a little difficult to respond to #2 even if I assume your GMAT ends up above 80% for both quant and verbal. Your work experience is competitive for INSEAD. 3. Get a high GMAT. Make time for extra-curricular activities or community service. Assume leadership roles.

    Best,
    Linda

  • P

    Linda,
My Undergrad GPA was 2.1 though if it is of any help my HS GPA was 3.45 inclusive of Honors & College Prep classes. My current work experience is in a quantitative field.
In addition, I’m sure I would be able to get very good recommendations from my superiors.

If I am able to get a score of >=80% on the quant and on the verbal on the GMATs, would I still have a chance?

    Many Thanks.

    Best,
    P

  • Linda Abraham

Without recent A’s and even with a competitive GMAT, your chances of acceptance would be very poor at INSEAD given your undergrad GPA.

    Sorry.

    Linda

  • Brian

    Hi Linda,
I have question about the GMAT. I first scored high 90s percentile on verbal, but only low 70s on quant. Hoping to improve my quant score, I took it a second time and ended up doing slightly worse on both sections. Would much appreciate your thoughts.
    Brian

  • Linda Abraham

    Brian,

It’s hard to say with not context. I know that INSEAD wants to see 80% or more on each section of the GMAT. They will bend a little (let’s say down to 70%) if other sections are strong. Below that 70% other elements have to be stellar and convince them that applicant has the ability despite the GMAT score.

On the bright side, they do take the highest individual scores.

Unless there were extenuating circumstances, perhaps it’s time now to turn your attention to other elements in the application and also to choosing back-up programs that you will also apply to.

    Best,
    Linda

  • Michael

    Hello Linda,
I have quite strong academic results (maximum GPA and 730 GMAT). I have been working for 3 years in a well known firm in the consulting sector. In spite of this I am worried about my age (30) and my very poor international experience; furthermore I have no part-time work experience and I have never joined any group or activity which could be relevant for the application.
Can you estimate how such weaknesses can affect my admission?

    Thanks in advance.

  • Linda Abraham

For INSEAD, your age is not a problem. Your lack of international exposure, which is critical for INSEAD, is a significant weakness and could be fatal to your application. If I were you, I would get such experience before applying even if that meant postponing the application by a year.

You wrote that you have never joined a group or activity which could be relevant for your application. Don’t be so sure. Your role in almost any group, especially if it was a leadership role, could be relevant. I am having trouble thinking of a group where it wouldn’t be relevant if you played a significant role.

    Linda

  • Linda Abraham

    Nil,

Sorry for my slow response. I was on vacation.

INSEAD ideally wants to see 80% score on the quant section and the math section of the GMAT. They put more weight on the individual scores than the overall scores. Please understand, however, that 80% is not a cut-off or guarantee. INSEAD will admit some applicants with GMAT scores below the 80% and will reject applicants with GMAT scores above it.

    Best,
    Linda

  • Linda Abraham

    Naren,

I’m afraid to disappoint, you but I can’t give you a numerical answer as to your chances third round. I can tell you that they will decline as you go through the admissions cycle. At the same time, don’t submit an application in a rushed fashion or you simply won’t do a good job.

Regardless of your professional background, INSEAD ideally wants to see 80% score on the quant section and the math section of the GMAT.

    Jean Louis,

You have a very impressive profile and it is competitive for INSEAD. As I mentioned earlier, INSEAD looks more closely at the quant and verbal percentiles. Although not rigid, it would like to see over 80% on each for the GMAT which means you want to be closer to 700 than 650.

    Best,
    Linda

I think INSEAD would be a stretch school for you. Your international exposure is limited (compared to most INSEAD students) and your academic stats and work experience are average by INSEAD standards. Basically, if there is something to really commend you or make you stand out in a positive way,it isn’t showing in what you wrote above. Sorry,

    Best,
    Linda

  • Cameron Miller

    Hi Linda,

Seems like you have a great feel for suitability for the INSEAD program. I’m wondering whether to push for 1st round.

    My profile:
    Australian 27
    Engineering / Commerce Degrees
3.1 GPA (3.3GPA in final year)
    720 Gmat (V94%,Q78%)
    Work experience on 5 continents
    1.5years into expatriation in Paris
Recommendations may be weak if I go for Sept 30 first round

    Your thoughts are greatly appreciated.

    Rgds,

    Cam

  • Linda Abraham

    Cam,

If you think you will have better recommendation 2nd round, then wait for second round. You want your application to be at its best when you submit and you don’t want weak recommendations.

    Regards,
    Linda

  • Tom

    Hi Linda,

With poor Gmat results (610, V85%, Q45%) do you think I should take the gmat again and postpone my application?

My profile: French, 30, Master Degree in Management, 8 years of sales & marketing experiences including 2 years in Saudi arabia for the French Embassy and 4 years as Export Sales Manager for a world leader in defence technologies. • Saliha

    Hi Linda,
I’m 23 year old Pakistani girl, and have nearly 1.5 years of work experience with Barclays Bank plc (UK based). This is my second work experience and it is an international experience in the globally competitive and extremely diverse market Dubai, United Arab Emirates. I am currently, employed in the role of a Sales Manager with a team that I have to manage along with their monthly targets and everything related to them, since I am their first line manager.
I have done a four year Bsc Program from LUMS, a prestigious university in Pakistan, renouned worldwide and especially in South Asia.
I have also done various internships including a 6 month long internship at a U.S. based marketing firm in Pakistan as well.
I was an above average student at LUMS and completed my majors in Social Sciences and Economics.
I wanted to know if 2 years of International Experience at Barclays Bank plc (because it would be 2 years by the time I get admitted, if I ever do at INSEAD), along with my other credentials, and the fact that at a relatively young age, I came here from Pakistan to work- counts for admission at INSEAD?
I have yet to take my GMAT. My TOEFL IBT was re-taken recently and I scored 116/120.
Thanks. Pls. do give me your feedback. It will be much appreciated

    Regards,

    Saliha

  • Liga

    Linda,

I would really appreciate your opinion on my profile. Is it interesting enough and competitive for INSEAD?

I have done Gmat more than 5 years ago and I didn’t do too well. But I am preparing to do gmat again and aiming for 650-700.

I am from Latvia, Eastern Europe. I have lived in U.S. for 7 years.
    Languages:
    Latvian: Native
    English: Advanced
    Russian: intermediate
    German: Beginner
    French: Beginner
    Hindi: Beginner

I have Bachelor’s degree in International Business from University of Latvia and MBA, concentration in International Business from University of Baltimore, US.

I have worked for world’s largest container line MSC as export agent (3 years) and as assistance accounting manager (2 yr). My coworkers were from Jamaica, Germany, Italy, Greece, and Ecuador.
Now I am working as Accounting/Administrative Manager for Aircraft Company. Both companies have branches worldwide.
    Total work experience: 6.5 years

I have traveled a bit as well.
Hobbies: Mountain skiing, skating, tennis, running

Would it be disadvantage that I have one MBA from US school?
p.s. I will explain in my essays how MBA from INSEAD would help to reach my career goal.

Thank you very much for your comments.

  • Linda Abraham

    Tom

I strongly urge you to retake the GMAT before you apply. You need to have a higher GMAT score in order to have a shot at INSEAD. Once you get a competitive GMAT, your chances are strong.(I’m assuming your grades are good.)

    Linda

  • Linda Abraham

    Salitha,

In general INSEAD tends to admit somewhat more experienced applicants than you are. However, you have very impressive experience. I recommend you wait an additional year to apply to increase your chances of acceptance, but if you do well on the GMAT, it is still possible that you could be accepted this application cycle.

    Best,
    Linda

  • Linda Abraham

    Roasana,

INSEAD has a minimum IBT score and I don’t think you meet it (http://www.insead.edu/mba/admissions/checklist.cfm). Consequently I don’t think INSEAD will admit you. Sorry.

    Best,
    Linda

  • Linda Abraham

    Liga,

I am not sure what is INSEAD’s policy re a 2nd MBA. You just need to ask if they will consider applications from people who already have an MBA. If they will, then address it as you intend to.

Your work experience is competitive for INSEAD. You want your GMAT to show close to or above 80% in both quant and verbal. If that’s what you get and INSEAD will consider an application from someone who has an MBA, then you have a shot.

    Best,
    Linda

  • Praveen

  • Linda Abraham

Except for that GMAT the information your provide is competitive at INSEAD — albeit not terribly distinctive.

To be competitive, you want to have a GMAT greater than or equal to the 80% on the quant and on the verbal. The separate percentile scores are more important for INSEAD than the total.

    Best,
    Linda

  • Praveen

Thanks for your feedback Linda. I am ready to wait for an year and add on my experience Do you think its going to help? Also, what do u think will increase my chances at INSEAD? I want to apply just once and give it the best shot.

    Thanks again

  • Linda Abraham

    Praveen,

To improve your profile for INSEAD:
    1) Raise your GMAT.
    2) Acquire add’l int’l and cross cultural experience.
    3) Continue to progress and advance at work, assuming more responsibility and leadership.
    4) Present a goal that requries INSEAD’s general mgmt and global approach.

    Best,
    Linda

  • Praveen

Thanks Linda for your time and useful feedback and i hope to talk to u in a year from now.

I have not yet given GMAT and I have just 1 year work experience in the IT field.

Are there any chances of INSEAD even considering me, provided I get an average score in GMAT?

  • Sera

    Hello Linda,

    Here is my information.

Weak point is GPA, 2.1 undergrad.
Majored in law in #1 law school in my country. To offset it, I applied and graduated from top 20 law school in the US with 3.0 GPA.

    As for the other factors,,,
    GMAT: 760 (quant 99%, verbal 97%)
Work experience: 7 yrs in Asia and US (co-founded IT venture and listed it on public market in Asia)
    Age: +30
International Experience: traveled +30 countries and worked in Asia and US.
    Etc: have US attorney license

Please let me know my chance of getting in INSEAD.

    Many thanks.

  • Linda Abraham

    Snags,

Assuming that your GMAT ends up as anticipated, you have a decent chance at INSEAD. I am a little concerned about your undergrad percentage but hopeful that a strong GMAT, impressive experience, and your grad grades will overcome it.

    Best,
    Linda

  • Linda Abraham

    Deepa,

I never say never :-) , but I think your chances at INSEAD would improve dramatically if you work for several years and gain multi-cultural exposure.

    Best,
    Linda

  • Linda Abraham

    Venkat,

    You’re welcome.

The information you gave above is competitive at INSEAD provided that the percentile breakdowns on the verbal and quant are both above 75%, 80% ideally.

I do want to caution that there is a lot to an admissions decision besides GPA, GMAT, and length of work experience, but those subjective elements of an application don’t fit into a short profile evaluation request.

    Best,
    Linda

  • Linda Abraham

    Sera,

You are hard to evaluate because there is such a discrepancy between your test scores and grades and because you have impressive work experience. I would encourage you to apply to INSEAD if it’s your first choice and then apply to other programs because you have to be realistic about that GPA. Don’t get your heart set on INSEAD.

    Best,
    Linda

  • Jean

    Hi Linda,

I am thinking about applying to INSEAD.
    My profile: French, 35, GMAT 710 (87/83)
I worked in trading for about 10 years, in UK, US and Asia.
I am as well partner in a startup we did set up 3y ago and working on that currently.
I am thinking about insead because of entrepreneurship side, I think it would help me taking the business to another level.
I am not sure about my chances because of my age (I will be 36 by then), also not sure about the strongness of recommendations.

Would be happy to hear your thoughts.

    Regards,
    Jean

  • snags

    Thanks for your feedback Linda.

  • Linda Abraham

    Jean,

I think INSEAD would prefer that you apply to their EMBA program.
You may also want to consider the new MSC in Entrepreneurship offered by Babson, EMLYON, and Zhejiang University in China — http://www.msc-entrepreneurship.com .

    Best,
    Linda

  • Linda Abraham

    You’re welcome, Snags.

  • Jean

    Hi Linda

    Thanks for your answer.

I am more interested in the INSEAD MBA than in the EMBA (cost, lenght and opportunity to be in Singap and open my business there) but if you think there is no chance I am not going to go ahead with the application.

    Best,
    Jean

  • Linda Abraham

    Jean,

"No chance" is strong and stronger than I think. I do think your chances are much better at INSEAD’s EMBA program than their regular MBA program. I know that up until a few years ago, they would not accept anyone over 35 to their MBA program. They have softened the policy, but I doubt if they have put out the welcome mat since they have an EMBA program aimed at 35+.

    Hi Linda,

Really appreciate your answering everyone’s queries.
Could you please evaluate my profile as well:

MBA with 4yrs Work-ex by the time of admission: Product manager in leading IT Product Company
Worked in Germany,Singapore for few months and have conducted several trainings
    GPA in Masters: 3.2
    GPA in Bachelors (Engineering) 2.9
have done basic course in German
GMAT: 720 (above 80% in both sections)

    Thanks

    Isha

  • Linda Abraham

    Bharara,

Your academic stats are highly competitive. The quantity of your work experience is low for INSEAD. If you have progressed at an unusually rapid rate and can reflect a multi-cultural perspective, then you may still have a chance. If you have progressed at a typical rate professionally, then you will probably be better off waiting.

    Best,
    Linda

  • Linda Abraham

My attitude towards the GMAT is that you go in and simply aim for the highest score you can get. I am not familiar with the expressions "idle score in GMAT"

I wouldn’t worry about documentation as long as you are truthful.

    Best,
    Linda

  • Linda Abraham

    Isha ,

All elements above, except your GPA, which is a problem, are competitive at INSEAD. Only applying can determine if the other elements of your application are so compelling that INSEAD will overlook your GPA.

    Best,
    Linda

  • bharara

Thanks Linda. Can you recommend any other schools which I should apply to?

  • Linda Abraham

    Bharara,

Have you consider CMU Tepper or Purdue?

    Linda

  • Isha

    Hi Linda,

    Thanks for your feedback.

I am from India and the way grading works her is that 75%(GPA 3.4) is considered to be quite good in engineering and 65% (2.9) in MBA (atleast in my university)

Basis that, do you think that i ll be able to defend these percentages?

In one of the MBA Fairs, the faculty had mentioned that the scores / GPA are evaluated in context of the country and institute of the candidate. Would you know if Insead also feels the same way?

    Correction in above:
    GPA in Masters: 2.9
    GPA in Bachelors (Engineering) 3.2

    Thanks
    Isha

  • Linda Abraham

    Isha,

The comment you heard about the grade percentages is accurate, unless your school is not well-known or obscure. MBA programs are expert at evaluating and interpreting transcripts from the well-known engineering programs in India. Don’t translate them into the American 4.0 GPA system unless the school asks you to do so. Frequently the GPA is a less favorable number than the percentage.

The 75% is quite good, but the 65% for the grad GPA is a bit low for INSEAD. AT the same time, it doesn’t knock you out of consideration. Apply and see what happens.

    Best,
    Linda

  • Linda Abraham

    Tara,

You have a competitive academic and professional profile for INSEAD. I hope you will also be able to show enough global and multi-cultural exposure. Certainly your training abroad and DELF A2 certification is a good start.

    Best,
    Linda

  • Linda Abraham

    Ken

Your work experience sounds great. Your GMAT is competitive, but I am concerned that your undergrad GPA could knock you out? Have you taken any graded classes since college?

    Linda

  • Linda Abraham

    Mihir,

You have a competitive profile for INSEAD.

    Best,
    Linda

  • Linda Abraham

    Mohsin,

Your GPA is on the low side for INSEAD, but with your GMAT and int’l experience, you certainly have a chance.

    Best,
    Linda

  • Linda Abraham

    Siva

    1) That depends somewhat on what your GMAT is . You should also double check that INSEAD will consider someone who already has an MBA. The other elements of your profile are competitive.
    2) You should aim for the best score you can get. There is no such thing as too high of a GMAT. Scores below 80% on both the verbal and the quant start to hurt and hurt more the lower they go.

    Best,
    Linda

  • Siva

    Hi Linda,
Thank you very much for the response. Where or whom should I approach to know whether MBA candidates are accepted into INSEAD?
Thanks for the input on GMAT score.

  • Christopher

    Hi Linda
Thanks for taking the time to answer all the questions. Would appreciate your comment on my app.

    1)Male 28y South African

2)Worked in Sales at a multinational FMCG for 1 year.
Last 4 years been working in Exports in Africa for a medium sized (300 people) manufacturing concern. Obviously traveled a lot through Africa on business, dealing with many cultures and for the last year I’ve been the Sales Manager for Exports.

    3) Have also traveled to around 25 countries around the globe and was an exchange student at school.

    4) My GMAT score: Q75 V 78

5)Bachelors degree in commerce: 60% (not sure what this equates to in GPA.)

    5) LOTS of leadership / organizing positions throughout my life. I consider this my best trait and biggest advantage in application.

I guess the big question is how badly does the low undergrad score affect my admission chances at INSEAD? Should the GMAT be higher to offset this? Will it make a difference if I take some Finance/Statistics short courses at a local varsity?

Thanks a lot for your time. Appreciated.
(By the way, will only be applying to start Jan 2011)

  • Linda Abraham

    Christopher,
I am also concerned that your academic stats are less than compelling for INSEAD. I think a higher GMAT score would help you. I few courses may also help. Your international and African experience is impressive and should be appealing to INSEAD. I just don’t know if it will overcome the so-so academics.

Apply to INSEAD, but also apply or be prepared to apply to additional programs with slightly lower stats at matriculation.

If we can help you with your application, please let me know.

    Regards,
    Linda Abraham

  • Christopher

Thanks a lot for the feedback Linda, it is much appreciated.
Do you think that RSM Erusmus might be a good backup, or will the academics still be an obstacle?
I quite like their international outlook and composition of students. I think the brand recognition is probably not that great outside the Benelux countries, but is it a worthwhile school to consider?
    Thanks again.

  • Linda Abraham

You would be more competitive at Erasmus. I don’t have a good sense of the school’s "brand value" internationally, other than to say that it is not as good as INSEAD. You may also want to consider HEC.

    Best,
    Linda

  • Alessandro

    Linda,

A couple of days ago I posted my profile so you could give me a recommendation as to whether I would be a competitive candidate or not, but not only I received no but, but also, my profile was deleted. I would like to know what´s the deal about this. Why was I deleted?

    Aless

  • Mr. T

    Christopher,

I say apply! Leaders aren´t determined by their university GPA. This is only a mere indicative of a period of your life when you were young and beginig to experience new things.
What´s done, is done. You cannot change that. GO FOR IT!
For what I´ve been reading, nobody is good or competitive enough for INSEAD.

Everybody, go for it! Don´t let stupid things like a low GPA from 8 years ago get in your way! Being judged for what happened so long ago is as senseless as being rejected from a job for not getting an A in biology while in high school.
If they reject you for a low GPA, in spite of an incredible work experience record, strong extracurriculars, a good GMAT and a lot of international exposure, I say they are not worth the trouble. They don´t deserve you.
Success is not correlated to your university GPA. It is correlated to your personality, ambition, creativity and experiences. (Most 4.0 GPA´s are people with little life experience because they spent most of their time, if not all of it, studying learning from books and not from real life. They are 100% theory).

Christopher, once again, go for it!
    Everybody, if you want it, GO FOR IT!}

College GPA, the GMAT, Work experience, International exposure, etc, are all obstacles. Obstacles are there to stop only those who don´t want it that much.

Failing is a part of life. If you ask me, failing will teach you more than success. People may consider a low GPA as a failure, that you are not good enough. College is a time when we are supposed to experience life and learn from our mistakes, not to study all the time to achieve a perfect GPA. College is a time when we are not sure what we want in life. And don´t worry if you don´t know. The most interesting people I know, didn´t know what to do with their lives way after turning 35 and graduating from top b-university with an MBA.
Why should we know at 18-22 what we want to do for the rest of our lives?
So, why should we prepare for something we are not sure about?
I believe people start building their own paths once they graduated, worked for some years and experienced life to the max.

Who we are is a combination of what we lived, our life experiences, not what we studied or how well we did in college.

EVERYONE, GO FOR IT! If you get accepted congratulations, if you don´t, don´t worry, your life won´t be over and there will be other excellent, if not better, choices around. Life is short, enjoy it, and don´t let anyone, ANYONE, stop you from those things you want.
Don´t let one little detail like low GPA, not a perfect GMAT, not enough work experience, or not enough extracurriculars stop you!

Good luck to everyone! You are as good as you imagine!

  • Mr. T

Probably they will delete my post. If they do, consider studying in a place where freedom of speech and open opinions are censored.

    Peace. Out.

    Alessandro,

I’m sorry. I don’t know what happened. Could you repost?

    Ramank,

It is really hard to say without a GMAT because your score is a factor in admissions. I can tell you that lack of international exposure or at least cross-cultural experience is a negative at INSEAD.

    Best,
    Linda

  • Linda Abraham

    Arun,

The information you provide is competitive at INSEAD.

    Best,
    Linda

  • Linda Abraham

    Alessandro,

I don’t know how you managed to do all this and be only 23 years old. However if INSEAD is going to admit any 23 year old, they will admit one like you. If you are for real, you have a highly competitive profile and I anticipate good new for you.

    Best,
    Linda

  • Alessandro

    Linda,

Thank you very much. I always tried to live to the max and enjoy everything. I traveled a lot and the most importat thing I learned is that life isn´t lived by staying at home. Math comes very easy for me, so I didn´t have to spend much time studying in college.
Eventhough I have a fairly good GPA, this easn´t my main objective. It was to enjoy life. When you enjoy things and do them in a relaxed way, they just come easy.

Thank you once again for your opinion.

    Regards,

    Alessandro

    Personal profile:

    Professional profile:
    2 year SW engineer/team lead in China;
    1.5 year part-time entrepreneur in IT in China;
2 year SW engineer in Europe for a fortune 500

    Academic background:
    1. Bsc in Computer Science in China, 75/100
    2. Msc in Information System in Europe, 7/10
    3. Advanced degree program (with a professional doctorate degree) in Europe

    Extracurriculum
    Founded and maintain online alumni clubs for my schools and university;
    Co-founded a large Chinese expat club in Europe;
Led a student club of more than 100 at university

    Career goal:
    1. short term: IT strategic consulting
    2. long term: entreprenuer in IT consulting

    My questions:
    1. How do you feel my chance and fit to Insead or any other top schools in US and Europe

    2. I have a big dilemma of choosing the round. I am completing my application package and can apply to Insead R2. But I could do definitely better (not much, maybe 30% better — no accurate measurement) if I had more time.
    1) Shall I apply for R2 or wait for the next round?
    2) If I have choice between R3 for Sep intake and R1 for Jan intake, which one shall I choose?
    3) Will the notification dates of R3 (Sep) and R1(Jan) be conflicting with my R2 applications to US schools?
    4) If I have accepted US offers and paid the deposite, what would be the consequence if I decided to give up the offer and the deposite?

I hope I am not bothering you too much with the questions. Thank you very much.

  • Linda Abraham

    Lee,

All aspects of your profile are competitive at INSEAD other than your age. You are younger and less experienced than the typical accepted applicant at INSEAD. By the time of matriculation you will have a full year of additional work experience and hopefully that will be enough. You may want to look at http://www.accepted.com/mba/younger.aspx .

    Best,
    Linda

  • Linda Abraham

    MBA2010,

    To answer your questions:

    1) You have a competitive profile at INSEAD and US top bschools, especially the ones with higher average ages at matriculation.
2.1) It’s hard to answer in a vacuum, but I would probably say that you want the application to be as strong as possible and you should wait until the Feb round if there is going to be that big of an improvement.
2.2)R3 isn’t horrible at INSEAD. If you want to go sooner than later, I recommend you apply R3 this year. If I had to choose between R4 this year and R1 next year, I would probably say to wait.
    2.3) I don’t really understand this question.
2.4) You lose the deposit. I know of no other consequence.

    Best,
    Linda

  • MBA2010

Thank you Linda. Your insights are very helpful

I’d like to rephrase my 3rd question: Are the R2 deposit deadlines of US schools earlier than the final notification of Insead R3(April 30)?

  • Lee

    Hi Linda,

Thanks very much for your feedback. Soon there is going to be a rather big change in my job scope, since I will be the only one left to shoulder the statistics work for the retail department, with support from regional statisticians. Hopefully this will add on to my experience.

Thanks once again. Really appreciate your help.

    Regards,
    Lee

  • Linda Abraham

    MBA2010,

INSEAD’s final notification date for R3 applicants to the Sept. 2010 intake is April 30, 2010.

Many US schools will require your decision (and deposit) around that date, but it varies by school. You need to check the web sites of the individual schools you are interested in to see how the deposit requirements relate to INSEAD’s notification date.

Sometimes, a school will allow an accepted applicant an additional week or two to make a decision, but you can’t really count on it at this point.

    Best,
    Linda

    Hi Linda,

I am planning to apply to INSEAD for Jan 2011.

My current GMAT score is 680 (Q46,V38) (Q76%,V83%).
I am hesitating to retake the GMAT because of my low score in math.
However at the same time I would like to spend as much as time on my essays…

    Linda,

I would like to ask you about the recommendation letters. I can get excellent letters from my supervisor and the CEO, but I can also get a letter from a Peace Nobel Price winner and a former northamerican President (neither of the Bushes!!). They know me as a person, but I haven´t worked with them. Should I ask them to write one, or I should only stick to my job related recommendations.

Also I wanted to ask you about my age for other top B schools if you have any idea about their requirements.

Thank you very much for your advice.

    Regards,

    Alessandro

    Hi Linda,

I would like to apply to INSEAD for Sep 2011. I would like your help to evaluate my profile and weaknesses that I should improve. Thanks in advance.

    Below my profile:

Nacionality: Angolan/Portuguese (I lived 8 years in Angola and then I moved to Portugal to study)

    Education:

    Degree of 5 years in Civil Engineering (14 values in 20, 2nd best of the class);

    Work Experience:

2005-2008: Working within a medium Steel Structures Company as a junior site manager, been promoted twice. I worked in several projects and in the last year of these 3, I led teams of about 15/20 people.

Jan 2009 so far: Working within a major construction company (number 1 in Portugal and top20 in Europe). I started as assistant of site manager and after 4 months I was promoted to site manager.

Since March 09 I working on the company’s branch in Angola.

My function is to manage the project (time and costs), leading a team of 80 people, including skilled and unskilled labor, as well as subcontractors.

Value of the project: 35,000,000 USD

Languages: Portuguese, English and Spanish (regular)

‘ve traveled to various countries in Asia, Europe, America and Africa.

And just a few achievements that may be interest to refer, since that show leadership at a young age.

1992-2000: For 8 years in a row I was elected prefect of the class, at school, being the representative of my colleagues with teachers.

    1992-1993: Twice Portuguese Karate Champion (under 12), individual and team (of wich I was captain);

Just one last note: I want to do an MBA because over 4 years of work I realized that what I like more in my job is the management itself, rather than the technical engineering. Thus, I would like to improve my knowledge of management and strategy, as well as leadership. The aim is to work in industry, but not necessarily in the constraction.

    Thanks again.

    Best regards,
    Ricardo

    Hi Linda,

I am planning to apply to INSEAD for Jan 2011.

My current GMAT score is 680 (Q46,V38) (Q76%,V83%).
I am hesitating to retake the GMAT because of my low score in math.
However at the same time I would like to spend as much as time on my essays…

Below is a short summary of my profle to give you more info:

    -French male, 30 years old

-Education: engineering diploma from a top engineering school in France (SUPELEC) + master of engineering studies in telecomunication from an australian university (Wollongong)

So should I retake the GMAT?
Do I have any chance for INSEAD MBA?

    Thanks in advance
    Stephane

    Stephane,

You’re borderline. I suggest you focus on the essays and not retake the GMAT given your undergrad engineering major IF you earned high grades. If your grades were mediocre or low, then you should retake the GMAT.

With that said, the safer route regardless of your undergrad grades, especially if you are confident you can raise your quant score, is to retake. There should be enough time to retake the GMAT and prepare solid essays by INSEAD’s Feb. 10 deadline.

    Best,
    Linda

  • Linda Abraham

    Ricardo,

Assuming you have a competitive GMAT score when you apply, you have a competitive profile for INSEAD.

    Best,

You really do get around! :-)

I would stick to the job-related recs.

    Thanks Linda,

I will follow your advice and retake the GMAT.

Otherwise, how do you evaluate my chance for INSEAD?

    Thanks again
    Stephane

  • Linda Abraham

    GP,

You have several strong points (job responsibilities, patents, interesting extra-curriculars) but you have fairly average academic stats (albeit from a good school) and you lack international exposure, which is important at INSEAD.

I advise you to apply to INSEAD since you are basically competitive, but also apply to other MBA programs that support your goals.

    Best,
    Linda

  • Linda Abraham

With your current score, I am pessimistic. If you get 80% on each of the sections, then you would have a competitive profile for INSEAD.

    Best,
    Linda

  • GP

    Hi Linda,
Thanks for your advice. I will definitely apply to INSEAD. My goals are more aligned to entrepreneurship in IT industry as suggested by my recent involvements in a startup.
Can you suggest few good schools in the top league which I can target based on my profile. How good are my chances in my current selection of schools which currently include ISB, INSEAD, Ross, Cornell and Darden. Do I stand a chance in schools like Harvard or Wharton. Actually your help would be of great importance to me as I am not able to figure out the best possible options for me.

  • Linda Abraham

    GP,

Consider CMU, MIT (stretch), and UCLA. You have a competitive profile for the schools you list. HBS and Wharton would be stretch programs for you and I think you should apply to programs where you are more likely to get accepted.

    Best,
    Linda

Apologise for the oversight, was planning to apply for Jan 2011 Insead

  • Lucas

    Hi Linda,

I am planning to apply to Jan 2011 INSEAD class – possibly in Round I. I would appreciate your views on overall INSEAD’s suitability for a person with my background, as well as your general brief comments on my profile: overall chances, points I should flash out in my application essays, any other tips.

Are there any other MBA programmes that you think I should consider or does INSEAD indeed appear the best option, i.e. IE, IMD, accelerated Columbia programme (I would not be so keen on doing a 2-year programme)?

    Below is my summary profile.

    Thank you very much!
    Lucas

    + + + +

28yo male from one of Central Eastern Europe (CEE) countries

    GMAT: 710 (V:89%, Q: 83%)

    Education:
Double master (Finance and Management) from a top CEE university – very good GPA (top 2%)

    CFA charterholder

    Experience:
5 years full-time experience in a bulge-bracket investment bank in London, M&A / sector investment banking team (finished analyst programme, promoted to Associate, currently Associate 2, i.e. from today I need two more years until I am eligible for further promotion)

Earlier two internships with finance companies in the home country (Big 4, bank)

    International experience:
    * In my current IB role worked on M&A / capital markets projects for clients across all EMEA, visited on business: USA, Spain, Ireland, the Netherlands, Poland, Hungary
    * Travelled for longer trips (leisure) to several Latin American countries + visited most of West European countries and several states in the US
    * Foreign languages, other than native (fluent / advanced): English, German, Spanish

Extracurricular activities: active amateur tennis player, scuba diver and photographer; however no real involvement in external organisations / societies or voluntary positions.

    Why MBA / Why INSEAD:
I see MBA as a long-term investment and preparation for senior management positions in the farther future rather than a short term career-switch tool. I am considering the continuation of investment banking career (even with the same employer) for at least 2-3 years post MBA. Ultimate goal would be to work in a senior management position in the industry back in CEE (I would expect the companies from the region will be much more involved in international business in the future than currently). Intermediate step could be to switch to a PE role with a focus on the region in order to better develop local contacts.

INSEAD offers great strategy courses and, given my goals, I would like to strengthen that part of my business knowledge rather than finance where my credentials and experience is already quite strong.

    Hi Linda,

I am planning to apply for the Sept 2010 admission for the campus in Singapore. Below is my profile:

25 Year old male from Malaysia, undergrad degree from UBC (Vancouver, Canada) with a GPA score of 3.7/4.3. Majored in Finance with good marks in those classes.

3 Years of working experience in Vancouver, Canada. Part of the corporate planning team for a distribution company. Involved primarily in risk management, financing & strategies. Reports directly to the CFO and CEO.

Had summer working experience in Malaysia as a financial journalist, interviewing CEOs as well as the Prime Minister.

GMAT score of 700 (47 Quant and 38 Verbal)

Completed CFA Level 3 back in August. Passed all levels on my first attempts.

Involved in many extra curricular activities in college (student leader for international students, part of the peer program, etc). Hasn’t been involved much since started working.

Could you rate my chances? Many thanks.

  • Linda Abraham

    Amit,

I apologize for the tardy response. It’s been busy.

I’m assuming that you are 34, not 24.

I am not optimistic about your chances at INSEAD although the absence of a GMAT makes this a highly unreliable evaluation. Here are my causes of concern:

    1. Your undergrad grades are below average for INSEAD.
    2. You seem to have jumped around a lot.

However, INSEAD would find your experience in Lago attractive and a high GMAT could mitigate.

    Best,
    Linda

  • Linda Abraham

    Manu,

Yes, your short-term visits "count" although what you say about them and the insight you gained from them is more important than simply listing countries you visited or did business with. The other items you mention are competitive at INSEAD.

    Best,
    Linda

  • Linda Abraham

    Lucas,

Yes you are a highly competitive candidate at INSEAD and for CBS’ J-term program. I think you should also consider LBS, which does have a shorter option. You may also want to consider Kellogg’s one-year MBA (http://www.kellogg.northwestern.edu/admissions/programs/1yearmba.htm )

If you would consider a two-year program, I would recommend you consider HBS, Tuck, Wharton and Chicago.

Please let me know if you would like help with your applications: http://www.accepted.com/services/mbaservices.aspx

    Best,
    Linda

  • Linda Abraham

    Bernard,

Your work experience is a little on the low side for INSEAD. Everything else sounds good.

    Best,

I am planning to apply to INSEAD for Sept 2010. Below is my profile.

    - 29 years old male Chinese

    - BBA (accountancy), GPA: 3.34 from well-known university in Hong Kong
    - CPA, FRM, CFA level 3

    Work experience:
    - 4 years audit experience at Big4 accounting firm in HK, with projects in HK and China
    - 1 year internal experience at investment banks, with Malaysia and Philippines projects (about 1 month)
    - 1.5 year compliance (investigation) experience at the Hong Kong Monetary Authority

    Hi Linda,

I would like to apply for the Insead Jan 2011 intake and would appreciate your inputs greatly.

    Profile : Singaporean Chinese, 29

Work Experience : Top Sovereign Wealth Fund in the world, largest in asia, 3rd largest globally; Data Analyst for 3.5 years – niche IT/finance role

Big 4 auditing : Insurance specialisation; 1.5 yrs
    top performer

    GMAT : 690

    GPA : Honours 2nd Lower, B- Average
Accountancy, accelerated 3 year honors program

Recs : Director (current) & Partner (ex job)

Weak points : GPA and international exposure.

    Compensating factors?
I worked on correspondence jobs in the Big 4, and in my current role, due to my firm’s headquartering in Singapore, I fly my international exposure in rather than myself out.

Work on all global markets, apart from heavy interaction with US/UK

    Would dearly love your inputs

  • Linda Abraham

    Hker,

You do have a competitive profile for INSEAD. In terms of possible weaknesses, I don’t see much leadership or community service in the above. Both would strengthen your profile and improve your chances. Also, look for opportunities in your application to show that you are not a stereotypical "bean counter," and that you know who to create and initiate, not just measure what others have done.

    Best,
    Linda

  • Linda Abraham

    Yip,

Your work experience sounds excellent, but I am concerned that your GPA when combined with an at best aveage GMAT (for INSEAD) is going to hurt you. I think it makes sense for you to apply, but if you are serious about obtaining your MBA, also apply elsewhere.

    Best,
    Linda

  • Stephane

    Hi Linda,

Following your advice, I retook the GMAT. I managed to get a better score overall but my verbal score dropped significantly:
    - First GMAT score: 680 (Q76%, V83%)
    - Second GMAT score: 710 (Q98%, V68%)

Do you think that the verbal score will be an issue for my INSEAD application? I am planning to use my essays to try to counter-balance this low verbal score in the second GMAT score and hope that my first score will help.

How do you evaluate my chance for INSEAD?

Thanks in advance for your feedback.
    Stephane

    Stephane,
As of June, INSEAD takes the highest of each score. They will see all of them, but they evaluate based on the highest Q and the highest Verbal.

Assuming your grades are competitive and you can show leadership, then you have a competitive profile for INSEAD.

    Hi Linda,

I forget to add up few more details with respect to my profile as stated in above comments.

I am 33 year old Male, Indian.

I have been involved in Siebel CRM implementation from the start of my career and have grown up from a core technical expert to Siebel Business/Functional/Product Consultant and Subject Matter expert in delivering CRM solution across industry verticles and horizontals.

Please can you point out my weekness?

  • Linda Abraham

    Violette,

You certainly have a chance at INSEAD, but I don’t think it is a particularly strong one. I am a little concerned about your verbal scores and unless you present the international aspects of your work more persuasively than above, I am not confident your multi-cultural experience is going to be competitive at INSEAD.

    Best,
    Linda

  • Linda Abraham

    Raj,

The main weakness I see is just the stiff competition among Indian applicants in IT. You will need an above average GMAT. Otherwise, the information you presented is competitive at INSEAD and at top MBA programs worldwide.

    Best,
    Linda

  • Jay

    Hi Linda,

I am very interested in applying to INSEAD in Round 1 in early March 2010 and would really appreciate your feedback on my profile.

    - 28 year old Asian-Canadian male (born in Canada, immigrant parents born in Asia)
    - 3.2/4.0 GPA from top Canadian university (with one additional business course taken a year later while working in which I received an A+)
    - 710 GMAT (92% verbal, 75% quant)
    - 6 years work experience by matriculation, with 2 in investment management, and the past 4 years in investment banking (M&A) at a large foreign bank in their New York office, with 1 promotion so far, and where I work extensively with foreign companies/management (and travel internationally a fair bit as well)
    - CFA Charterholder
    - a lot of cultural and leadership activities while in school but not much since
    - potential for very strong recommendation letters from close superiors with MBAs
    - on a related note, I am Asian-Canadian and now work in the US, but that is the extent of my international work experience and I am not sure whether going from Canada to the US would even be considered ‘international experience’
    - am I better off taking the GMAT to get quant up to 80% and perhaps applying in the second round?

  • Raj

    Thank you so much Linda,

It was nice to read your comments on my profile.

I will try my best to get above average GMAT. I am considering the benchmark of GMAT Score to be above 680. Will this be good enough or I need to score above 700 to make my application look competitive.

I will definitely come back with my score and will get an evaluation done from you.

I am only interested in doing MBA program which is close to 1 year. Can you advice few more institute other than INSTEAD which I can add up in my aspiration list?

    Regards
    Raj

I worked full-time throughout UG, hence my GPA is low.

6 years of work experience for U.S. Army – Civilian – Nuclear Research and Fire Control System. Have won many awards and have been promoted way ahead of my peers.

    Many thanks.

  • Linda Abraham

    Raj,

You will want each section of your GMAT to come in at or above the 80%.

Also consider IMD, Oxford, Cambridge, IE, and IESE.

    Best,
    Linda

  • Linda Abraham

    Anxious Person,

I’m not optimistic given the combination of a low GPA AND a low GMAT (for INSEAD). If you raise your GMAT, the situation changes dramatically.

    Best,
    Linda

  • Linda Abraham

    Andy,

I think you have a highly competitive profile for INSEAD.

    Best,
    Linda

  • Linda Abraham

    Chase,

You need to significantly improve your quant score if you want to have a serious chance of acceptance at INSEAD.

    Best,
    Linda

  • Linda Abraham

    Rahul,

I am not optimistic. I think you would be more competitive if you applied while working and could write about your travels and current professional growth.

    Best,
    Linda

  • Rahul

    Thanks for that, Linda.

Do you feel I need to carry on working in the same industry, or will something different be alright?

I ask because I’ve had it with finance, and would like to pursue something entrepreneurial (hence my interest in INSEAD).

    Thanks,
    Rahul

  • Linda Abraham

    Rahul,

Ideally,go for a job closer to what you want to do. That will be good from all angles. If you can’t find what you want, go back to banking.

    Best,
    Linda

  • Tee

    Hi Linda,

I’m planning to appply to INSEAD for the Sep 2010 intake. Would greatly appreciate your input on my competitiveness especially given that I am apply for the fourth round.

    My profile is as follows:

    Thai Male, 24

    GMAT:
660, taken only once back in 2007 and minimum prep.

    Education:
    -Primary school in SG
-High school diploma (top 5%) from Australia
    - Bachelor of Science in Computer Science, First honors and top graduate from Top 3 university in Thailand
    - MPhil in Technology Policy with distinction and ranked in top quartile of class, from top 3 university in UK

    Work Experience:
    - 2 years (in Sep 2010) management consulting experience in top 3 management consulting firm.Worked on projects in 4 different countries; with very strong performance evaluation
    - less than 1 year as IT consultant at top 3 IT consultancy with very strong performance before leaving to help out at family business after father passed away abruptly.

    Recommendations:
    - Counselors during my tenure at both firms (management consultancy and IT consultancy)
    - QUESTION here: should i get someone more senior like Director level who is willing to write me a great recommendation but perhaps worked less closely with VS the 2 people listed here who are more junior (associate partner and senior manager) but worked very closely with me.

    Others:
    - 3 time national youth representative to international youth leadership forums
    - 2 time national debating champion
    - 2 month Internship as research assistant with policy team attached to deputy prime minister for economic matters
    - Core working committee of a up and rising youth network that focuses on mobilizing youths to work on social projects

Given that its fourth round and my lack of time to re-take GMAT, I am wondering if my application is competitive. If not, what are quick wins I can do?

Thank you so much for your kind advice in advance!

    Best regards,
    Tee

  • Tee

sorry for the the unpolished language in my earlier post because i was stuck with work and didnt get time to reread what was written. my Toefl score is 116/120 and IELTs is 8.5/9. i also did both my university degrees in English.

  • Polar

    Hi Linda,
Thank you in advance for your time and help. I am currently applying to INSEAD and simply wanted to have an honest opinion of my chances:

    Profile:
    24/Male (25 entering)
    Canada
    Canadian born Chinese

    Languages:
    - Native English and French
    - Native spoken practical written Cantonese and Mandarin

    Academics and Tests:
    - McGill University (world renowned)
    - B.Electrical Engineering (B Average)
    - Minor Management
    - Completed CFA Level 1
    - GMAT: 740 (V:87%, Q:93%)

    Work Exp:
    - 2 and 1/2 year (3 when entering) in aviation simulation technologies. (world leading company).
    - Technical team leader in charge of leading design and deployment efforts. (teams of 20). 50-50 split between highly technical engineering tasks, and project management tasks (requirements scoping, design planning, etc…).
    - Completed over 10 full cycle ($1M to $8M) projects with customers in US, Europe, Middle East and East Asia
    - Traveled to 7 cities in US, China and Japan for my projects.

    - Internship during University
    - Part-time work exp throughout university in the Education industry

    Extracurricular:
    - Founded a small 5-man organization aimed at providing mentoring services to high school students
    - Team captain of a sports team recently gaining sponsorship from the Canadian Cancer Society

    Extra info:
    - Rejected from HBS and MIT
    - Accepted with scholarship for a top Canadian MBA

Again, thank you very much for your help. I am worried that my age and work experience "quantity" will be fatal in my application. I don’t know how to address those since they are "out of my control" other than waiting a year or 2. Do I at least stand a chance?

    -Polar

  • Linda Abraham

    Tee,

I think that with a higher GMAT and a little more work experience (plus an earlier app) you would be highly competitive at INSEAD. I don’t think that you are currently and advise you to apply for the next intake after improving your GMAT.

Keep the recommenders who know you better. They are more effective than a someone with a higher title who doesn’t know you as well.

    Best,
    Linda

  • Linda Abraham

    Polar,

I share your concerns about work experience. They only way to compensate is to show that you accomplished in these 3 years what others take 4-5 years to accomplish.

    Best,
    Linda

  • Polar

    Hi Linda,

Thanks for the reply. I believe that I can show I have accomplished more than "3 years". First of, my position is typically offered to people with 3-5 years exp, I was one of the only ones in the history of the department to be offered this position upon graduation. I am also currently the pilot of one of our high visibility products. Finally, I am also a mentor for 2 new recruits (who have 5+ exp at another company) and multiple interns.

If they are willing to "accept" my work experience, do you think the rest of my profile is competitive?

    Thanks!

    -Polar

  • Linda Abraham

    Polar,

Yes. The elements of your profile are competitive. I am slightly surprised by the rejections from both MIT and HBS. If you are also rejected at INSEAD and decide to reapply, look to your application — how you presented yourself — and see if you didn’t make mistakes there. You might be interested in http://www.accepted.com/mba/reapplicants.aspx and http://www.accepted.com/mba/admissionsconsultingservices.aspx#link121.

  • HS

    Hi,

I just wanted to let you know that I am completely amazed by the fact that you have been able to reply back to people consistently. Some of the profile’s I read while browsing the thread were incredible. Some were great and some were quite superhuman.

Going back to the basics – I have a question for you as well :) (though I should be able to deduce it from the pattern in thread, but I will still ask to be mentally assure me)

I plan to take my GMAT sometime this year. I intend to be around 720+. My question is if my background is reasonable (esp my grad school work) for an INSEAD MBA.

    Professional -
    * Working in top 20 of the Fortune 500 IT company. Led a team of 5 in US and operationally manged a team of 15 in India. Worked Technology Architecture, Global Delivery & building an operational team for Middleware Services for an account. Promoted after 1 yr, was graded as one of the top performers for the year. Exp total – 1.3 yrs
    * Worked in IT Division of a Biotech. Hired from grad school. Exp total. – 2 yrs
    * Was a summer intern in top semiconductor company for 0.25 yrs (during grad school)
    * Have worked in Southern California for most of the time.

    Education
    * MS Computer Science (Top 10 Engineering Schools in US) – 3.0 (this is my sore point, as I think my GPA isn’t that good)
    * BS Computer Science (Government Engineering College, India – normal in top 50 in India) – 3.7

    Extracurricular -

    Post Grad School -
    * Led an effort to develop a data aggregator for disabled technologies. This was part of a Disability friendly society project. Team was of 4 university students (same as my grad school). Project was completed, but wasnt of a commercial value eventually. But it helped us gain good understanding of Assisted Technologies.
    * Planning to help, tutor disabled students some elementary courses

    Pre Grad School -
    * Was Vice President of Computer Science Graduate Club for a semester
IEEE Chair at my undergrad school
    * Won a couple of regional prizes for caricature back in high school

Given that, would you think I would have a good chance for – 1 year MBA program – from Cornell, INSEAD, Kellog? Please advice.

    Thanks much!
    HS

    Hi Linda,

I am sorry, I forgot some details.

    Recommendations: strong.

I have a question for you, too.
Which other EU or US school would you recommend me to consider, too?

    Thank you very much.

    Alex

  • Linda Abraham

    HS,

You have a shot at Cornell’s accelerated program, but your GPA is a weakness. Kellogg’s program is for people with stronger business backgrounds. I don’t think your chances there are good. You also have a chance at INSEAD, but again, your grad GPA is a weakness and you will need to show multi-cultural experience, which doesn’t come through so strongly above.

    Best,
    Linda

  • Linda Abraham

    Alex,

You have a competitive profile for INSEAD, but you shouldn’t apply only to INSEAD. Before I recommend additional schools, could you please tell me what you want to do post-MBA?

    Linda

  • Alex

    Hi Linda,
    thanks for your answer.

The aim is to improve my knowledge about strategy and finance.
I would enter a management consulting firm with focus on finance.

    Kind regards,

    Hi Linda,

    2. a senior design engineer in chip design.
    3. was involved in the design of various products.
    4. around a year of international exposure in France and Germany.
    5. currently a lead in a particular chip design.
    6. till date did not involve in people management.

    hi Linda,
I am a female mechanical engineer from India working as asst. manager in the largest automobile OEM here in supply chain division. Gmat score:730
    grad percentage:75%.
Work experience when i join mba:2 years
    College extracurriculars: v.good
grad college rating: avg.(not of of the best colleges but a decent one)
Pls evaluate my chances of getting into the top 10 us b schools…
do u think waiting another year to have 3 year work experience would increase my chances dramaticall or just marginally?

    Ankita

  • Linda Abraham

    Alex,

consider LBS, Chicago, Tuck, NYU, Columbia, Kellogg, and Wharton.

    Best,
    Linda

  • Linda Abraham

    Prashanth,

Assuming you have a 700+ GMAT, you are competitive at INSEAD, however, your lack of management or leadership experience is a weakness. Thinnk about times you motivated or led others. You will want to bring at least some of those occasions out in your application, because otherwise you seem very much like a "techie" without leadership skills, or at least, without leadership experience.

    Best,
    Linda

  • Linda Abraham

    Ankita,

The info you provide is competitive at most top-10 b-schools, especially those welcoming to younger applicants. At the latter type of school, an additional year will probably be marginally beneficial. At a school that values experience more, the additional could make more of a difference.

    Best,
    Linda

  • Alex

    Hi Linda,

    thanks for your answer.
Just one question: I’ll consider the B-schools you recommended me.

    What about other EU-schools?
    In particular, what about SDA?

    Best,
    Alex

    Hi Linda, how are you?

I would like to know how you see my chances of being accepted in INSEAD (planning to apply for Jan11 in R2).

    nationality: Argentinean/Italian
    age: turning 26 in june
    GMAT: 760 (unnoficial)
    TOEFL: 108/120
GPA: Hard to get an equivalent. My degree is a 5+ year degree -actuary- (more similar to a MSc than a Bachelor). I ended up with a 7.6 grade (max grade=10). Only 13 people graduated my year, I was 5th (and possible the youngest, but hard to get stats about that).

    Work exp:
3 years in a public health organization (Buenos Aires)
2 years in a financial consultancy firm (Madrid, some travel to Barcelona)
1 year in a petroleum company (Madrid, 1 week project in Houston)

I was teaching assistant in 4 different courses during 4 years in my univ.

Have some professional exams (actuarial/financial), some extracurricular activities like maths and computing olympiads.

    Best regards!

  • Linda Abraham

    J,

I believe you are a highly competitive candidate to INSEAD. With strong essays, recs, and interviews, you have a good chance of acceptance.

If we can be of help, please let me know.

    Best,
    Linda

  • Neha

    Hi Linda,

I am thinking about applying to INSEAD and would like to know about my chances.

I have quite strong academic results (maximum GPA and 730 GMAT). I have done my graduation from the top institute in India.I have been working for 2 years in a well known firm in the oil industry. My work profile includes engineering and managerial work.I have around 3 months of international experience.
My extra curricular activities are poor; furthermore I have never joined any group or activity which could be relevant for the application.

Do you think I have any chances of getting through?
Also kindly suggest how could I improve my profile.

    Neha

  • Linda Abraham

    Neha,

I encourage you to wait a year. You have less than average work experience for INSEAD and if you wait a year, you could attempt to develop your extra-curricular commitments and also progress further at work.

With additional work experience and professional progression along with the participation in extra-curricular activities, you would have a competitive profile for INSEAD.

  • Michael

    Hi Linda,

I’m looking for your professional advice on this matter as you are both blunt (in a good way) and very knowledgeable. I’d like to apply to INSEAD for the September 2011 class (and I’d like to know what other top MBA programs you’d recommend to apply for as well). My profile is as follows:

Age: 24 now (25 at matriculation)
Background: Grew up half my life in Lebanon, and the other half in Saudi Arabia (studied at an accredited American school for my K-12 education).

At 18, I moved to Toronto, Canada to pursue an Honours BA in Economics and Management Studies. My CGPA is 2.86 and my final 2-year CGPA is 3.41 (funnily enough I took double the course load in my last 2 years than in my first 2 years). From a multicultural perspective, Canada is as diverse as it gets, especially doing business here.

    My GMAT is 700.

I am very fluent in English, very proficient in Arabic and have basic French writing and oral skills.

    Work Experience:
2 month general business administration internship in Saudi Arabia directly after my high school graduation.

4 month marketing internship in Lebanon after 1st year of university (with a letter of recommendation).

I started a side business providing online marketing services during the first 2 years of university which resulted in over $250,000 USD in revenue from direct sales and eventually selling the business to an interested party in California, USA. I decided to sell the business to start another venture with 2 university colleagues whom I had developed a strong relationship with at the time.

I started another company with 2 University friends in my 3rd year of University – a creative marketing agency. After graduating from the University of Toronto, I sold my shares at the company to pursue some corporate experience with Microsoft. The agency is currently still in business and has expanded to 5 full-time employees – I’ve maintained an excellent relationship with both of my past partners.

This is my 2nd year at Microsoft Canada, and will have 3 years of experience with Microsoft at matriculation (Sept 2011). I spent my first year on the Mobile Communications team as the Partner Channel Business Development Manager. During this period I received the Microsoft Excellence Award which awarded by a senior Microsoft director. I can get a strong recommendation letter from said director.

I decided to move to another role (Partner Account Manager – Sales/Consulting role working with a portfolio of Microsoft’s top 20 reseller partners in Western Canada) focusing on the broader Microsoft product group (versus focusing solely on the mobile business) to get a much better exposure to the market. I can get a strong recommendation letter from my manager.

I can also get a 3rd strong recommendation letter from a Senior VP at Ipsos – a multi-billion dollar France-based market research company.

    Extra-Curricular:
1 year: Communications Manager for my university’s largest Management and Economics Student Association during my senior year.
1.5 years: Currently writing for and maintaining a snowboarding blog since creating it 1.5 years ago which has received great reviews and many praises from the readers.
3 years: Indoor and outdoor soccer leagues playing at least once a week.

    Activities:
Snowboarding, soccer, rock climbing, blogging, startup industry events.

    Thanks in advance!

  • Linda Abraham

    Michael,

Before I respond, were there extenuating circumstances that contributed to the low GPA during your first two years of college? Have you taken any graded classes since you finished college? Are your GMAT percentile scores balanced?

    Linda

  • Michael

    Hi Linda,

I had a rough time my first 2 years having moved to Canada by myself and that is the biggest reason. My mother had passed away (suicide) when I was 16, and that was the first time I was away from my family. Moreover, I was running my side business as well, which helped put me through college without having to take any loans.

With regards to graded classes post-college, I’m not sure how that would make a difference, as my grades in the last 2 years were consistent.

My GMAT percentile was 95% (Q49 and V40).

    Hope that helps.

    Thanks.

What do you think about my low gpa in undergrad? do you think my high grad
gpa s can eleminate this weakness for insead?

    Best regards!
    Aykut

  • Linda Abraham

    Mike,

Definitely let INSEAD know about the circumstances surrounding your low grades during the first two years at college and ask them to pay more attention to the last two years, as a more accurate reflection of your capabilities.

You certainly have a chance of admission to INSEAD, but it is a stretch largely because of the GPA. Because of your professional progress and multi-cultural background, you have a chance, but that GPA could keep you out.

    Best,
    Linda

  • Linda Abraham

    Aykut,

I think INSEAD is one of the schools that is less forgiving when the undergrad GPA is low, but certainly your multi-cultural work, leadership, and grad GPA will help. In addition, please confirm w INSEAD that they will accept someone who has an MBA. Some schools do not; others do. And the policies are in flux.

    Best,
    Linda

  • Michael

    Hey Linda,

Thanks for your answers. Would a higher GMAT make a difference? If so, what should I aim for?

    Thanks.

  • Linda Abraham

    Michael,

A higher GMAT never hurt anyone, but I really don’t think that’s the issue here. A good GMAT shows you have raw ability. A good GPA shows you know how to use that talent in an academic setting. As you yourself point out, your last two years had a better (and competitive GPA). I suggest you write an optional essay and ask them to look more closely at your last two years as evidence of your ability because of the circumstances surrounding the first two years of college.

    Best,
    Linda

    Hi Linda,

Could you please let me know if Insead is a good shot for me?

    My profile:

Indian Male, age 31, undergrad engineering, 73% Aggregate (3.8GPA)
    GMAT 750(V-95%, Q-93%)

WorkExp: 10 years in IT (3 in India and the recent 7 in the US)

In US, I do contract jobs (Consultant roles) at big client firms. My designation is programmer analyst, but have led small teams in many projects at client sites. I have taken on every leadership opportunity that came my way, but at the end of the day I am still a consultant.

Apart from work, my interests are road travel and adventure sports, have organized many such trips at the work place and in the friends circle. I have travelled all over the US (and in India, while I was there).

My concerns are Age, Designation and lack of community activities. How much would they affect my chances of being a strategy consultant through Insead?

Thanks for taking questions through this blog!

    Mithun

    Hi Linda,

I’m about to apply to INSEAD but my GMAT is pretty low: 620. I did 2 attempts; in the first one I scored higher on the verbal part while the second time I did better on the Quantitative part.

Now my question is: will they consider the best individual score or the best overall score?

    Thanks,
    Filippo

  • Linda Abraham

    Mithun,

I am not at all concerned about your age at INSEAD. I am concerned about fairly limited international exposure, or more accurately a fairly common profile combined with fairly common multi-cultural exposure. Your lack of community service also is a weakness. However, given your grades, work experience, and GMAT score, you do have a chance. The only way to find out if you can be accepted is to apply. Regarding your title, I wouldn’t worry about it if you can show that you handled significant responsibility.

    Best,
    Linda

  • Linda Abraham

    Dinesh,

You are on the older end and getting to a point where that can be an issue.. You have a great GMAT. Your multi-cultural experience seems limited. Your community service appears non-existent and your extra curriculars are limited (in the context of the applicant pool) You have a chance, but I am not optimistic. You may have a better chance at INSEAD’s EMBA program.

    Best,
    Linda

  • Linda Abraham

They will consider the best on each section.

    Hi Linda,
I am an Indian male, Engineer from IIT (7.45/10). I will have a total work ex of 3.6 years by the time I will join Insead.
    My GMAT is 740
For first 6 months I worked in an IT firm but since then I am working for a start up consulting firm in the field of Climate change. I now head north India operations of the firm.
I had a summer intern in China of two months in environment during my undergrad (that is the only international exposure I have).
I have couple of international publication in environment as well.
    Extra curricular:
Taught poor Students during my undergrad and have been teaching them even now.
Member Institute’s cricket team: Won couple of gold medals in national events
Conducted Alumni Meet and Cultural festival in Institute
Do you think I stand any chance at Insead. red flags I see is my low GPA, low work ex and almost nil international exposure.

  • Linda Abraham

    Paras,

Your GPA is not low. I agree that your limited international exposure is a drawback, particularly at INSEAD. Your work experience is on the light side for INSEAD, but you have had interesting and distinctive work. Any chance you can acquire more international exposure in the next few months?

    Best,
    Linda

  • Al

    Hi Linda,

Please opine on my chances in INSEAD. Following is my profile:

Indian Male with 6 years of experience in a Indian IT organization.

Fast paced growth. Working as a project manager for last two years in the USA.

Around 4 years of experience in the USA and Canada.

    GMAT: 770

Working as a volunteer in a community service program.

Average undergrad performance, but the real problem is that I failed in two of the subjects in one semester and had to retake them.

How much do you think would this weaken my chances and how can I compensate it in the other sections of the application?

Also, does it matter if I apply in round 3 rather than round 2 for Jan 2011 intake?

Thanks so much for your time and advise.

  • Paras

    Thanks

  • Paras

Thanks Linda for your advice. Unfortunately I don’t foresee any international experience in near future, so should I just drop Insead or give it a shot and hope for the best. I was also wondering, other than Insead do I stand chance in other European schools such as IE (April 2011), Said, Oxford (October 2011)?

  • emin

    Hi Linda,

I want to apply to INSEAD. Would you please comment on my chances because I am thinking of applying for the Jan 2010 intake.

By the way my GMAT is 730 (q46,v45) .Unfortunately because I had to take the TOEFL last minute for it was required by Oxford(which rejected me), I scored only 102. (With really no idea about the exam and no preparation. I registered on April 8 and took it on April 10!!) But I graduated from an English speaking institution. May I choose not to claim my TOEFL as they told me face to face that my undergrad diploma would waive me from that?

Many thanks for your answer. By the way, I am thinking about applying to HEC, too. what are my chances there? I am admitted to Bocconi but because my focus is on entrepreneurship I am not very sure about going to Bocconi.
Please enlighten me and thanks in advance.

And sorry but just to add, many people around me keep saying that my profile fits the standards of the US B-schools better. Is it true that I should wait for some more months and apply to US schools for the next intake?

  • Linda Abraham

    Al,

Failing two courses is an obstacle to overcome. YOur GMAT and strong professional record will help. However, the adcom will also consider the circumstances surrounding the failing grades, grades trends subsequent to the F’s, and the grades in any classes since your finished college, if any.

I can’t say how much these two grades will impact your application. They certainly won’t help. The best way to mitigate is with more recent solid grades and a high GMAT, which you clearly have. You may be interested in http://www.accepted.com/mba/lowstats.aspx .

    Hi Linda,

I am an Indian male with following profile and would request your assessment of my candidature -
Graduate from IIT – GPA 6.7/10
Good extra curricular in Dramatics and Sports.
    1 International publication in maths.
Work experience as of Jun’10 – 3 years in internal consulting and analytics (2 with Citigroup, 1 with American Express)
    Some international travel exposure (APAC+Hungary+US)
Community involvement in office and outside.
    GMAT – 770 (98 Quant, 95 VA)
    Confident of getting good recommendations.

I know my GPA is low but will rest of my profile give me a shot at Insead?
Also will a work exp of 4.3 yrs vs 3.6 yrs make a difference (Jan’11 vs Sep’11 class)?

I really want to do an MBA from a good college but realize that my GPA is low (and a factor that can not be changed). Could you suggest some good colleges that are relatively more forgiving on this.

    Thanks a lot.
    AB.

  • Linda Abraham

    Paras,

Your chances are better at the other schools on your list. Should you apply to INSEAD? That is really a personal decision. If you will regret never having tried and can afford the time and money to apply, then apply. If getting rejected would be traumatic or if you prefer to focus your efforts and resources on schools where you are more likely to gain admission, then don’t apply.

    Best,
    Linda

  • Linda Abraham

    Emin,

You do have a competitive profile for good US schools as well as for INSEAD and HEC.

Regarding the TOEFL, you need to check with the schools whether your undergrad qualifies you to waive the TOEFL. If it does, don’t submit your score. If it doesn’t and your score is below your target school’s minimum, then you shoudl retake it.

    Best,
    Linda

  • Linda Abraham

    Krishna,

I don’t think your age will be an issue for INSEAD, but don’t wait any longer. Otherwise you have a competitive profile for INSEAD.

    AB,

yes, you have a shot at INSEAD, but your lack of international work experience is as much of an issue as your grades. An additional six months of work experience could improve your chances if those additional months are months of increased responsibility and growth, not to mention international experience.

Before I recommend other schools, could you please tell me your post-MBA goal?

Hi Linda, in the short run, I’d like to work in consulting -for the broad business experience and industry exposure I can really only develop in that environment.

As a lawyer, I was never involved in the big-picture stuff that drives organizational agendas -never part of the group setting strategy and a course to implement it. We were always the facilitators, getting things done, but not having a say in the "why?" just the "how". Eventually I want to be in a position to contribute to the "why" and to make decisions based on it -whether as a consultant, or in Industry -I’ll let time tell the tale.

    Hi Linda,

Firstly, appreciate your insights and the time you re investing in this forum.

Having researched INSEAD s program, this is my no. 1 school of choice. I would appreciate your feedback on my applicability.

Intend to apply for 1st round for Sept 2011 entry.
27 yrs of age. Indian raised in Hong Kong. Current industry – Media & Entertainment. Full time work experience in U.S., Europe & Asia.

BA in English from leading U.S. Uni, with mgt courses undetaken. Major (course) GPA:3.45/4 Overall:2.9 (personal health issue diagnosed with at the time: plan to share in app.).
Co-founded NGO centred around Business Upskilling. Lots of leadership exp.
4 summer internships all in Hong Kong within Media & Advertising space (leading global co, in Marketing, AdSales & Account Mgt functions).

Upon graduation, started as Associate (Sales & Bus Dvpt) in a mgt consulting firm in U.S, transferred to London office after a year and promoted to Director (2-level jump, one of the youngest) managing UK, Belgium, Netherlands, Switzerland & South Africa regions (weekly travel) meeting C-level execs. KPIs incl qrtly revenue targets which I exceeded, and managing an associate who was promoted before my departure (the most valuable component of my experience – along with cross industry, cross regional & senior exec. exposure). Left London after 2 yrs.

Pursued a full time course in a leading performing arts school in Mumbai & alongside worked in an NGO centred around edu. for slum children. (Motivation was two-fold: to pursue passion in performing arts and understand media from front end – this is a planned essay topic – while living & doing business in India in a community service capactity).

Now, for a year been working in a Media giant in Hong Kong (AdSales) with a planned relocation (staying in the Media industry) to London across the coming months. If admitted, will have had an additional year work experience under my belt before MBA entry.

GMATS: To be taken in July.
Languages: Hindi (Fluent), French (Intermediate), Mandarin (Beginners)

Recommendations: Plan to obtain from senior manager & client from last company & senior mgt from current co.

Strengths: An "atypical" profile, global exposure (professionally: multinational exposure & personally: travelled to over 20 countries),
    Weaknesses: Low GPA/transcripy. GMATs pending

Motivation for Insead: Its global focus & DNA of the program I deem as "fit" for my background.
Post-MBA Plan: To succeed into management, leading a team of my own. Will consider switching industries.

    Questions:
    1) Is there an advantage applying from Hong Kong over London as an Indian of my background?
    2) What is the added value in applying first round?
    3) Do I have what s considered an "atypical" profile for Insead & if so, will this work in my favor for application? Accordingly, how heavily will my GPA & GMATs be weighed? There are quant. elements in my current & previous roles – is it worth to highlight these?
    4) Can you recommend other potential schools (U.S/Europe) I should consider?
    5) Any additional tips to improve chances of admission? i.e. additional courses locally delaying application entry…

    Thank you again Linda.

    Joy,

I actually substantially responded to you when my response "got lost." Anyway, here goes again.

    To answer your questions:

    1) yes, assuming you meet INSEAD’s language requirements.
    2) It’s better to apply earlier, but it is possible to get accepted 3rd round.
    3) HBS and Wharton are trending younger, and I don’t think your chances are great at those two schools. Kellogg, Tuck, Columbia, LBS, and Haas are options. You may also want to consider the Sloan Fellows programs.
    4) You are probably better off going with a work rec, unless the program indicates otherwise, but this is one area where details could change my view.
    5) Officially no. Schools take the highest score and from what I see they disregard initial bombs. However, the adcom sees the older scores.

    Best,
    Linda

    Hi Linda,

    Linda,

Kindly assess my chances at Insead’s August, 2010 intake.

I am a 28 year old male with a dual nationality (Saudi/American). My gmat score is a balanced 710 and my TOEFL ibt is 111. I have a bachelors degree in chemical engineering with a lower than average GPA from a Saudi university (3.22/5).

Have worked full time during my bachelor studies for 15 months in sales for a multinational cable network and then had a couple of entrepreneur experiences one of which was a great success. Post graduation sold the business and moved to work for a large local specialty chemicals company starting in corporate planning and ending up as a senior sales specialist two promotions later, managing 25% of export volumes. In the process did a lot of travelling and handled customer relationships across the globe (some of which are fortune 500 companies). I could get strong international recommendations from senior level employees at partnering companies (agents) as well as from my current manager.

    Appreciate your feedback.

    Regards,

    Rakan

  • Rakan

A correction to the above post. I am targeting the August, 2011 intake. Worth adding is that I will be having 5 years of experience by then. Also, I had completed a pre-MBA program at a Saudi university that is ranked amongst the top Middle Eastern schools with a GPA of 3.64 and straight As in quantitative subjects (although equivalent to a postgraduate diploma in management, it is not a degree granting program).

    SG,

To my knowledge INSEAD does not accept the GRE (http://www.ets.org/gre/institutions/about/mba/programs ) so you need to submit the GMAT. I would recommend that you retake, as you plan to do.

If you raise your GMAT and can demonstrate an interest in INSEAD’s global, cross-cultural approach, you have a competitive profile for INSEAD.

    Best,
    Linda

    Nomad,

Sorry it has taken me so long to respond. I missed your post. To answer your questions:

    Questions:
    1) Is there an advantage applying from Hong Kong over London as an Indian of my background?

Maybe, but it would be marginal.

    2) What is the added value in applying first round?

There are more spots available. In latter rounds, the admissions committee is frequently looking to add to the diversity of the class and people from common backgrounds or with lower stats could be at a disadvantage. There are some aspects of your background that are unusual, and there are others that aren’t.
    3) Do I have what s considered an "atypical" profile for Insead & if so, will this work in my favor for application? Accordingly, how heavily will my GPA & GMATs be weighed? There are quant. elements in my current & previous roles – is it worth to highlight these?

If your quant grades were low, then it would be a good idea to highlight somewhere that you work is highly quantitative. If you quant grades were good, it probably would be better to spotlight your multi-cultural experience and leadership.

As indicated above, there are some aspects of your profile that are distinctive (Indian raised in HK, educated in US who goes into M&E.) That is an atypical profile.

At the same time, INSEAD is a school, and a top school at that. Your background is not unique and they are unlikely to ignore your academic stats.

Focus on your international experience and leadership.

    4) Can you recommend other potential schools (U.S/Europe) I should consider?

It’s difficult without a GMAT score. Assuming your comes in around 700, consider Yale, Duke, UCLA, USC, and NYU.

    5) Any additional tips to improve chances of admission? i.e. additional courses locally delaying application entry…

I think you should focus first on your GMAT. That’s fundamental. Then worry about timing. Recent A’s would also be helpful to you.

    Best,
    Linda

    Calvin,

If each section of your GMAT is north of 70%, you have a competitive profile for INSEAD.

    Best,
    Linda

    Mildred,

With your current GMAT score, I have to say that I don’t think you can get accepted to INSEAD. If you improve your score significantly and also have some exposure to cultures and countries outside of Ghana, we can talk.

    Best,
    Linda

    Linda,

Thank you for your comments above. Focusing on GMATs at the moment.

    Cheers,

    Hi Linda,

I have read through most of the posts in this forum and found your responses very insightful. I would therefore greatly appreciate and value your thoughts on my situation (INSEAD reapplicant).

After applying to INSEAD during R2 (in December 2009) of the admissions cycle for entry in September 2010 I was short-listed for the interview stage. After the interviews I was waitlisted and then in May (2010) I was bumped off the waitlist.
I am extremely keen on reapplying but am not sure if my application will be competitive with my current GMAT score (Total – 650..Q-79, V- 64 !). I have taken the GMAT twice before this and gotten bad scores.

    1st attempt- 640 (Q-63, V – 82)
    2nd attempt – 620 !! (Q-75, V- 56)!! I really think I blew it when I took it the 2nd time.

The limited feedback that I got from the admissions office was –

    - I was a strong fit for the program and a candidate with a very good profile. She told me that they really liked my profile.
    - Nothing wrong with any of the key datapoints – Academic history (Undergrad and Masters grades), GMAT, work ex, essays, reco’s etc. She did mention that if they had had any issues with any of these then I wouldn’t have gotten as far as I did.

Whilst getting this feedback I asked her if there was anything I could do to boost my chances while reapplying ( I specifically mentioned re-taking the GMAT as I think its the one visible weak link to which she replied..yes it could help but its not a major problem otherwise I wouldn’t have gotten as far as I did).

This feedback has left me confused as its contrary to what is mentioned in this forum (INSEAD looks for candiates with 80% or more in quant and verbal) and to what is stated on the INSEAD website – "In order to be competitive, you should aim to achieve a score at or above the 70 – 75 percentiles in both the quant and verbal sections of the GMAT".

Question 1 – Given my current profile what do you think my chances are for admission into INSEAD. Can I do something to improve my chances (am aiming to apply in R1 for entry in Sep 2011).

Question 2 – Will INSEAD consider individual section scores (math/verbal) from different tests or do they just do focus on the most recent score. Am asking this question to determine whether I should re-take the GMAT.

Question 3- Given my profile what US schools would you recommend? would I need to significantly improve my GMAT score to increase my chances at Columbia, Kellogg, Stern etc

My profile just to give you some context is -

    Age- 29
    Sex- Male
Nationality – British (Indian Origin as I was born and raised in Mumbai).
Education – 1st class degree (came in top 10% of my class and was on dean’s list) from one of India’s top liberal arts colleges. I did a degree in Economics.
Masters in Finance from the University of Warwick in the UK. Did well (excess of 60%) in the course.
    GMAT – 1st attempt- 640 (Q-63, V – 82)
    2nd attempt – 620 !! (Q-75, V- 56)
    3rd attempt – 650 (Q-79, V- 64)

Work-ex- 3.5 years working on a rotational program at a top 3 US investment bank in London ( extensive travel and diverse work ex within investment banking due to the rotational nature of the program). I was promoted at the end of the program.
After 3.5 years I got poached by another leading investment bank (based in London). Total work ex – 6.5 years till now.

Good international exposure – have lived in the UK, France and in the US.

Good (and many) leadership experiences – both personal and professional

Career aspiration – is to switch career paths from banking to management consulting and focus on setting up my own advisory firm in due course

Thank you very very much for your time and consideration.

    Sandeep,

I think your GMAT score may be an issue for another reason. Elite management consulting firms frequently use the GMAT as a screening tool — at least in the US. If the score doesn’t have a 7 at the beginning, you are not competitive for a position. I’m not sure this is an issue for INSEAD and how much INSEAD looks at "hirability" in making admissions decision. I’m also not sure if that screen is used outside the U.S.

I would assume that given one of your exams you got an 82 on verbal and on another you got a 79 in Q, you’re competitive for INSEAD from an admissions perspective.

As she said, since you got so far, they clearly liked you. They just liked others a little more and the competition got you.

To answer #1: If there are fewer applicants like you applying next year, the outcome may be different. If there are a lot of applicants like you applying next year, the outcome is likely to be the same.

On another topic, if you say your short-term goal is mgmt consulting and you have a score that in the US may keep you out of mgmt consulting, there may be other concerns. And those concerns would certainly apply at US schools.

Question #2: As of June 2009, INSEAD considered the highest section scores. I haven’t heard of any change in this policy.

Question #3. The short answer is "yes." Tuck also considers the GMAT scores separately, but it is the only one that know of. Basically the US schools the feed into the top strategy consulting firms will want to see a 700 GMAT. Anything significantly less becomes a hurdle to overcome.

    Best,
    Linda

    Linda,

Thanks very much indeed for your swift reply. Much appreciated. Now that you mention it I do remember a Columbia student whom I met at an open day event in NY tell me the same thing about consulting firms using the GMAT as a screening tool. He also mentioned the 700 barrier. This does worry me. So I have decided to do the following –

I will re-apply to INSEAD with my current score and will aim to submit my application well before the R1 (Sep 29th) deadline. After this I will earmark 6-8 weeks and have another go at the GMAT !!…I am convinced now that I need to cross the 700 barrier not only to further my chances of admission into a US school but also to keep the consulting option open. Its an ambitious and some might say fool hardy plan. But I don’t think I have any other choice.

Hopefully if I get the GMAT done relatively early I could even call INSEAD and tell them my new score.

Just so that I am sure I understood your response to my 2nd question –
are you saying that INSEAD (as of June 2009) did consider the highest individual section scores from different tests? the text on the website doesn’t mention this (maybe I am not looking carefully enough).

In your opinion does "hireability" factor into admissions decision in the US?? am worried if INSEAD feels the same way.

I can demonstrate hireability as I have an open offer to come back to my current firm if I go for an MBA, My manager has already told me that.

Question – For the INSEAD re-application would it hurt my chances if I changed my career goals story?? instead of switching career paths I would like to continue building my career in the banking industry (where I am already doing an internal consultants job – strategy). After all they also know that many people go into school with one idea and come out with something else. That’s kind of the point in many ways. By doing this I would allay any hireability fears and also circumvent the 700+ employment screening barrier that management consulting firms put in place.

    What do you think?

Again appreciate your time and feedback.

    Many thanks

    Sandeep

  • Sandeep

    Hi Linda,

One further question – if I do make it past the 680-700 mark on the GMAT then which US schools would you advise me to apply to?

Just for your knowledge I was waitlisted at Duke and Tuck when I applied with a 640.

    Sandeep,

Yes, I am saying that INSEAD (as of June 2009) did consider the highest individual section scores from different tests? the text on the website doesn’t mention this (maybe I am not looking carefully enough).

yes, "hireability" is a factor at many US bschools. An offer to return is a good sign of "hireability" as long as you indicate you want to take the position.

Changing your goal may make sense if it makes sense to get an MBA and return to your current employer.

Founded a investor's club in India with 8 other people in 2007. Have increased the membership from 8 to 14. Club was formed for the mutual benefit and learning of all its members. Thanks a lot for your advise.

    David,

Your work experience is highly competitive for INSEAD. I really can't comment on the academic side of your profile without a GPA or GMAT. I am going to assume you did well because you received that scholarship. Aim for 70% on each section of the GMAT. Your age is not an issue at INSEAD or Oxford.

    Best,
    Linda

  • Linda Abraham

    Pranav,

You have a competitive profile for INSEAD, assuming that your GMAT was fairly balanced.

I am not sure of the impact of your joining the Poker enterprise on your INSEAD admissions chances. We recently had a former professional poker player get accepted at a different MBA program. My guess is that it would have little impact either way because your other experience is so solid and this would be a relatively short stint before you actually matriculate. Furthermore, impact on your application will also be determined by your impact in this position.

    Best,
    Linda

  • Sam

    Linda,

I would appreciate your feedback on the competitiveness of my profile for INSEAD.

    GMAT: 720 (80%+ on both Q&V)
    Undergrad GPA (Top 50 U.S. School): 3.7
Law School (Top 10 U.S. School) – Median GPA (around 3.3)
Work Experience: 2 years post undergrad at fortune 100 company in a leadership development program, 2 years working as a corporate attorney at a top law firm in New York City

International exposure: 1 previous summer internship in Asia (@ a Big 4 Accounting firm), lived abroad for several years and also particiapted in a study abroad program in China.

Extracurriculars – nothing too much here.

    Many thanks in advance,
    Sam

  • Sam

    Linda,

As an addition to my profile above, I have worked on several pro bono cases while working at the law firm. Would this be sufficient to constitute extracurricular activities for the purposes of the application?

    Thanks,
    Sam
