DON’T write an essay that simply discusses what you think the adcom wants to hear.

DO write about a topic that truly interests you, something that you’d genuinely like to share.

DON’T pressure yourself to write something extraordinary.

DO focus on writing something real. The genuine ordinary presented well is usually more impressive and credible than the phony extraordinary.

DON’T use a voice that is not your own. Don’t try and be funny if you’re not a particularly witty person. Don’t use big words if they’re not words you’d use in a day-to-day conversation.
