4 Do’s and Don’ts for Presenting Yourself in Your MBA Essays

Learn the 5 fatal flaws to avoid in your application essays! Here are some helpful DO’s and DON’Ts that will help you create a distinctive MBA application essay:

DON’T write an essay that simply discusses what you think the adcom wants to hear.

INSTEAD…

DO write about a topic that truly interests you, something that you’d genuinely like to share.

***

DON’T pressure yourself to write something extraordinary.

INSTEAD…

DO focus on writing something real. The genuine ordinary presented well is usually more impressive and credible than the phony extraordinary.

***

DON’T use a voice that is not your own. Don’t try and be funny if you’re not a particularly witty person. Don’t use big words if they’re not words you’d use in a day-to-day conversation.

INSTEAD…

DO write like you speak (though please make sure that it’s polite and polished).

***

DON’T write about OTHER people.

INSTEAD…

DO write about yourself!

***

The adcom wants to learn about YOU. Make sure that your essays (and your application as a whole) reflect the true you! Be yourself and you’ll end up with distinctive, unique application essays.
