The University of Virginia announced yesterday that Frank Batten Sr. is giving $100 million — the largest gift ever received by UVA — to create its new Frank Batten School of Leadership and Public Policy.
Batten previously donated $60 million to establish Darden’s Batten Institute, which promotes entrepreneurial leadership in business. He is a UVA alum (Class of 1950) and the retired chairman and CEO of Landmark Communications Inc., a privately held media company.
UVA intends to appoint a dean for the new School of Leadership and Public Policy by the 2007-2008 academic year and for the school to actually open in the fall of 2009. According to the announcement:
* to foster research on critical public problems such as poverty, education and health care; and,
* to apply its research in service to the broader community through outreach and public action. "
