UC Berkeley is receiving a $113 million gift from the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation to create 100 endowed faculty chairs and enable it to compete with wealthy private colleges for top faculty. Although public universities like UC Berkeley frequently receive large amounts for specific purposes — usually facilities, buildings, and special programs. The Hewlett gift is unusual in that it will go to pay for basic university services, like teaching.
This is the largest gift in UC Berkeley’s history.
