By now some of you have probably received your interview invites. That’s great news…but are you prepared? Here’s a tip that will help you connect with your interviewer:
One way to help you make that connection early on in the interview is to match your interviewer’s tone. Now, I’m certainly not saying that you shouldn’t be yourself – that is never good advice; but I am saying that you should take your interviewer’s personality or style into consideration when providing him or her with your answers.
For example, is your interviewer a fast talker who barely takes a breath of air between bubbly, friendly, and enthusiastic sentences? If so, then you may want to follow their cues and pick up the pace of your answers, turning on the charm and flashing your dazzling smile. If, on the other hand, your interviewer speaks with a more monotonous tone, then your mile-a-minute tempo may put them in a tizzy, leaving them unable to keep up with your answers.
Funny people can tolerate a joke or two. More serious interviewers may view your witticism as frivolity.
Be yourself, but use your keen sense of judgment to help you connect and get through to your interviewer.
