INSEAD 2010 MBA Application Questions, Deadlines, Tips.

INSEAD 2010 (Sept) MBA Essay Questions

My comments are in red:

JOB ESSAYS

1. Please give a detailed description of your job, including nature of work, major responsibilities; and, where relevant, employees under your supervision, size of budget, number of clients/products and results achieved. (250 words)

Note the emphasis on quantifying results. Numbers speak volumes about the amount of responsibility you have handled. Also, while the description asks for major responsibilities, if you focus on achievements and accomplishments, you will reveal both your responsibilities and those occasions when you really shined.

2. Please give us a full description of your career since graduating from university. If you were to remain with your present employer, what would be your next step in terms of position? (250 words)

Don't confuse "full description" with "history." How would you characterize your career since college? You also have to answer the second part of the question and you only have 250 words.

ESSAYS

1. Give a candid description of yourself, stressing the personal characteristics you feel to be your strengths and weaknesses and the main factors, which have influenced your personal development, giving examples when necessary. (400 words approx.)

For a question like this I recommend two strengths and one weakness. If you can choose one anecdote that reveals both the strengths and the weakness, you will have a strong essay. Don't forget to discuss how these qualities influenced your personal development.

A word on weaknesses. Be honest without going overboard. Don't make up a phony weakness. I attended an HBS info session a few years ago. One of the alumni said that he discussed a "phony weakness" in his essays (required for HBS that year) and his interviewer focused right on it, and basically said, "Come on. What's a real weakness?" The applicant had to get real in a hurry. Take advantage of the essay: Give it some thought and respond with the benefit of that reflection. For more information, please see "Flaws Make You Real."

At the recent AIGAC conference one of the adcom members remembered that an applicant in response to a similar question had listed his weakness in "pitching new ideas in a meeting." The adcom member felt that the applicant was specific, real, and showed self-awareness by revealing this flaw. In fact, by demonstrating these qualities in addition to the requested weakness that he was working on, the applicant actually enhanced his chances of acceptance with his response.

Don't write about "weakness in pitching new ideas in meetings" as your weakness just because you read it here :-) It will become like the swine flu of MBA essays -- an epidemic. However, you all have weakness. Now just  be thoughtful enough and honest enough to reveal yours.

2. Describe what you believe to be your two most substantial accomplishments to date, explaining why you view them as such. (400 words approx.)

Try to take accomplishments from different arenas of your life. (But don't go back to high school and earlier to do so.) The accomplishments should show impact, contribution, and for INSEAD at least one should have a multi-cultural flavor.

3. Describe a situation taken from school, business, civil or military life, where you did not meet your personal objectives, and discuss briefly the effect. (250 words approx.)

In choosing the situation, here's a case when you can go back in time a little -- let's say 2-5 years. You can illustrate how you learned from this situation and were able to meet similar objectives next time around.

4. Discuss your career goals. What skills do you expect to gain from studying at INSEAD and how will
they contribute to your professional career. (500 words approx.)

This is a forward-looking career goals question. Use the past just enough to set context for your future and show that your goals are anchored in experience. Then explain how INSEAD with its intense, one-year, general management program and strong international focus will help you achieve your goals.

5. Please choose one of the following two essay topics:

a) Have you ever experienced culture shock? What did it mean to you? (250 words approx.),

or

b) What would you say to a foreigner moving to your home country? (250 words approx.)

These two have been part of the INSEAD repertoire for several years. Choose the one that is easiest for you to answer and allows you to bring out a facet of your experience not found in the other essays.

6. (Optional) Is there anything that you have not mentioned in the above essays that you would like the Admissions Committee to know? (200 words approx.)

Take advantage of the optional essay to give them one more reason to admit you. DON'T use it for a grand summary, a restatement of your other essays, or something similarly boring, superficial, and repetitive. Write a tight, focused essay highlighting something you haven't yet discussed.

You want to have a GMAT that greater than or equal to the 80% on the quant and on the verbal. The separate percentile scores are more important for INSEAD than the total.

I am not sure how low is "somewhat low," which makes it a little difficult to respond to #2 even if I assume your GMAT ends up above 80% for both quant and verbal. Your work experience is competitive for INSEAD. 3. Get a high GMAT. Make time for extra-curricular activities or community service. Assume leadership roles.

Linda

Linda,
My Undergrad GPA was 2.1 though if it is of any help my HS GPA was 3.45 inclusive of Honors & College Prep classes. My current work experience is in a quantitative field.
In addition, I'm sure I would be able to get very good recommendations from my superiors.

If I am able to get a score of >=80% on the quant and on the verbal on the GMATs, would I still have a chance?

Many Thanks.

Best,
P

Without recent A's and even with a competitive GMAT, your chances of acceptance would be very poor at INSEAD given your undergrad GPA.

Sorry.

Hi Linda,
I have question about the GMAT. I first scored high 90s percentile on verbal, but only low 70s on quant. Hoping to improve my quant score, I took it a second time and ended up doing slightly worse on both sections. Would much appreciate your thoughts.

Brian,

It's hard to say with not context. I know that INSEAD wants to see 80% or more on each section of the GMAT. They will bend a little (let's say down to 70%) if other sections are strong. Below that 70% other elements have to be stellar and convince them that applicant has the ability despite the GMAT score.

On the bright side, they do take the highest individual scores.

Unless there were extenuating circumstances, perhaps it's time now to turn your attention to other elements in the application and also to choosing back-up programs that you will also apply to.

Best,
Linda

Hello Linda,
I have quite strong academic results (maximum GPA and 730 GMAT). I have been working for 3 years in a well known firm in the consulting sector. In spite of this I am worried about my age (30) and my very poor international experience; furthermore I have no part-time work experience and I have never joined any group or activity which could be relevant for the application.
Can you estimate how such weaknesses can affect my admission?

Thanks in advance.
August 15, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterMichael
For INSEAD, your age is not a problem. Your lack of international exposure, which is critical for INSEAD, is a significant weakness and could be fatal to your application. If I were you, I would get such experience before applying even if that meant postponing the application by a year.

You wrote that you have never joined a group or activity which could be relevant for your application. Don't be so sure. Your role in almost any group, especially if it was a leadership role, could be relevant. I am having trouble thinking of a group where it wouldn't be relevant if you played a significant role.

Best,
Linda

Nil,

Sorry for my slow response. I was on vacation.

INSEAD ideally wants to see 80% score on the quant section and the math section of the GMAT. They put more weight on the individual scores than the overall scores. Please understand, however, that 80% is not a cut-off or guarantee. INSEAD will admit some applicants with GMAT scores below the 80% and will reject applicants with GMAT scores above it.

Best,
Linda

Naren,

I'm afraid to disappoint, you but I can't give you a numerical answer as to your chances third round. I can tell you that they will decline as you go through the admissions cycle. At the same time, don't submit an application in a rushed fashion or you simply won't do a good job.

Regardless of your professional background, INSEAD ideally wants to see 80% score on the quant section and the math section of the GMAT. They put more weight on the individual scores than the overall scores. Please understand, however, that 80% is not a cut-off or guarantee. INSEAD will admit some applicants with GMAT scores below the 80% and will reject applicants with GMAT scores above it.

Jean Louis,

You have a very impressive profile and it is competitive for INSEAD. As I mentioned earlier, INSEAD looks more closely at the quant and verbal percentiles. Although not rigid, it would like to see over 80% on each for the GMAT which means you want to be closer to 700 than 650.

Best,
Linda

I think INSEAD would be a stretch school for you. Your international exposure is limited (compared to most INSEAD students) and your academic stats and work experience are average by INSEAD standards. Basically, if there is something to really commend you or make you stand out in a positive way,it isn't showing in what you wrote above. Sorry,

Best,
Linda

Hi Linda,

Seems like you have a great feel for suitability for the INSEAD program. I'm wondering whether to push for 1st round.

My profile:
Australian 27
Engineering / Commerce Degrees
3.1 GPA (3.3GPA in final year)
720 Gmat (V94%,Q78%)
Work experience on 5 continents
1.5years into expatriation in Paris
Recommendations may be weak if I go for Sept 30 first round

Your thoughts are greatly appreciated.

Rgds,

Cam

Cam,

If you think you will have better recommendation 2nd round, then wait for second round. You want your application to be at its best when you submit and you don't want weak recommendations.

Regards,
Linda
