What can I do to gain an acceptance offer if I am on a waitlist now, in May? Part 1 of 2.

For some, this time of year is not filled with the anticipation of entering Medical School but rather with discouragement as many students are sitting on waitlists still hoping for the best. If you are on a waitlist now in mid-May, you should send in an update letter immediately if you haven’t done so in the last few months. A well-written, straightforward, letter including (1) your continued interest in the specific Medical School as well as (2) updates the school may not be aware of, could make a difference and earn you an acceptance. As of May 15th all students accepted to multiple Medical Schools must make a choice and declare the school to which they plan to attend. Following this deadline and beginning in early June there will be waitlist movement for many schools.

The update will depend on your personal situation but may include a letter from you and /or an additional letter from a research mentor, academic advisor (if completing a post-bac program), science professor (if still in college), service position supervisor, or even a physician whom you may be working or volunteering with. Updated transcripts should always be forwarded directly to Admissions. Other supporting details that could be included in your update letter may be a reference for a newly submitted or accepted publication, notification of the completion of thesis work or an academic program, or even a description of a recent presentation of your research at a conference. Remember the letter should be short and direct, with a professional tone, while showing your sincere interest in the school. Almost anything “NEW” that contributes positively to your credentials can be included.

Having written a strong update letter, do try to keep positive since seats do open at many Medical Schools throughout the summer and right up to the first day of classes. Being positive is good, but on the other hand, you must also be realistic and begin serious reflection on your future goals and how to move forward.
