Your medical school applications are finished. Now what?
The applications are long gone, and you’ve had some interviews. If all goes well, acceptances will begin to roll in any time now. What should you be doing?
This might be a good time to revisit your list of schools and re-evaluate your choices in light of what you know now. With respect to schools at which you’ve interviewed, were there any major turn-ons or turn-offs? Are you much more or much less excited about certain schools now that you’ve had the opportunity to see the places and meet some faculty and students?
Creating a rank-ordered list of your schools will save you time, money, and stress once you have your first acceptance. If that acceptance comes from a school which ranks fairly high, you are free to decline offers of admission and interview invitations from your “lesser lights.” Just remember to answer all correspondence from schools promptly even when the schools in question no longer appeal to you. In addition, keep in mind that you should not be holding a place at more than two schools at any given time. AAMC frowns on holding multiple places, and doing so is a disservice to your fellow candidates. The place (or interview) you don’t want may be the answer to someone else’s prayers!
