International Enrollment Increases
According to the Institute of International Education’s annual Open Doors report, the educational village is increasingly global. More US students are studying abroad and more international students are coming to the US. A few stats of interest from the study:
- The number of international students enrolled in colleges and universities in the United States increased by 3% to a total of 582,984 in the 2006/07 academic year
- The number of new international students (those enrolled for the first time) rose by 10%.
- India remains the leading sending country of origin. The top three sending countries also experienced large increases in students coming to the US. India experienced a 10% increase to 83,833; China follows with an 8% increase; and Korea is in third place with a 6% increase.
- Enrollment from the Middle East increased a sharp 25% in 2006/07, with Saudi Arabia enjoying the most significant increase.
- Among the leading fields of study for international students in the U.S., business remains #1 with 18% percent of the total, closely followed by engineering with 15%. Intensive English experienced the largest increase in enrollments, up 30% from the prior year.
- US students going abroad to study increased by 8.5% to a total of 223,534.
- Some 58% of all U.S. students who study abroad do so in Europe (130,274).
- Latin America hosted 15% of all Americans studying abroad, Asia hosted 9%, Oceania (Australia, New Zealand and South Pacific Islands) hosted 6% and Africa 4%.
