MBA Essay Tips

I saw today two excellent articles with timely tips on MBA essays. Timely if you are planning to apply in later rounds. Perhaps a little tardy if you are aiming for January deadlines:

There is definitely overlap between the two articles. Ironically, I would like to focus on a comment made by Chicago's Rose Martinelli in the CollegeJournal piece and not mentioned in the Chicago GSB newsletter:

"The best essays illustrate important points with anecdotes from the writer's life, says Rosemaria Martinelli, associate dean for student recruitment and admissions at the University of Chicago Graduate School of Business. 'Their stories actually stay with you, because you feel like you know the person,' she says.

Sunday I attended a memorial service marking the first anniversary of my father's passing. The rabbi who conducted the service for a small group of close family and friends asked those present to share memories of my father. Without any coordination or planning, each person spoke about a different incident or interaction, and each anecdote illuminated different facets of my dad's character while reflecting the speaker's perspective and relationship with him.

Such is the power of anecdotes and specifics that these few short reflections really painted a picture of the complex, caring man I knew so well. You can use these same potent writing tools to introduce yourself to the admissions committee and help them get to know you.

American MBA obviously have a better reputation and a more extended alumni network in the USA. Try to pick a school with a strong global brand name. Teaching methods vary from school to school: some emphasize teaching theory while others prefer the distance case method. Check out this site for good online MBA options www.iitm.co.nr
