Hi Linda!

I am 28 year old Indian marketing professional looking at an american MBA to move beyond marketing and India into management consulting.

Since my 1st MBA from a 2nd tier school in India was done straight after my under graduate degree, I did not find most of the theory relevant at all...However after 5 years of some fantastic work ex, I think I can contribute and learn much more from an MBA class...hence planning a 2nd MBA.Add to this the fact that am looking at intl exposure and a shift into mgmt consulting...

Any 1st thoughts on how I present this to the adcom? Would "intl exposure" sound too trite? And would saying "I want to move into mgmt consulting and these firms hire from Ivy league schools" sounds too harsh?

Do let me know...and thanks a ton for the help!

You need to have specific goals that you cannot achieve unless you obtain the second MBA. You can't be "rank shopping" and you can't present yourself as wanting international exposure (way to vague.) You need to be focused, specific, and concrete.

If you want to do MC, then in what industry, region, and perhaps with a functional flavor, although the latter is not a requirement.

You also need to make sure that the schools you apply to will consider applications from those who already have an MBA. Some will not.

Linda, my boss asked me how he should response to a question such as "In what areas can the applicant improve? Has he or she worked on these areas?"
Will his mentioning that I don't know deeply about doing business -- I have engineering background -- devastate my candidacy in the adcom eyes?

Not at all. If he could say you show talent for management, but can benefit from the framework provided by a comprehensive business education because you simply lack that knowledge, it will be fine. It will also be true and logical.

Hopefully he will also, in the other questions, provide examples of your strengths and fitness for a management role.
