Admissions Consultants: Detente and Dialogue
In "Detente in the Admissions Office" BusinessWeek's Kerry Miller gives an overview of the state of affairs that exists between admissions consultants and admissions offices in light of the admissions consultants' presentation at the just-concluded GMAC conference.
The article highlights:
- The varied and changing views of admissions consultants among admissions officers.
- Admissions consultants are not going away.
- The similarities between the services provided to applicants by consultancies like Accepted.com and the Harvard College Writing Center.
- Consultants are in the process of forming a professional association to set standards for the industry, a step welcomed by business schools.
In my recent post about the admissions consultants' panel at the annual GMAC conference , I emphasized that as individual businesses, members of the panel, and representatives of a growing industry in MBA admissions, we seek a dialogue with the schools. And I am happy to report that since I returned from San Francisco, I have received emails from a number of school representatives, including schools critical of admissions consultants in this BW article.
The BW article concludes, "But as long as the dialogue continues, it's a step in the right direction."
I agree.
