AAMC calls for 30% Increase in Med School Enrollment

Concerned about a looming physician shortage, the AAMC recently called for a 30% increase in the number of medical school students by 2015, which would result in additional 5000 medical school graduates. The AAMC recommends increasing class size at existing schools as well as the establishment of additional new medical schools.

 The 30% figure represents a change for the AAMC. In February 2005 it called for a 15% increase in medical school enrollment. However, subsequently  ",,,analysis of key factors that affect physician supply and demand by the AAMC's Center for Workforce Studies found that a 30 percent increase was warranted."
