MBA Grab Bag
A few articles of interest to MBA applicants:
- "The Pros and Cons of Being an Investment Banker" may be too elementary for MBA wannabes, or it may just be the kick of reality some need. As you all know the hours are grueling: The rewards... The quoted average salary for new MBAs going into IB in 2006: $185,000 annually.
- "Taking on the 'Cut-throat' Culture' of B-school" presents the dark side of b-school. (And I thought it only existed at HBS.) In this interview with Dr. Kerry Patterson, professor at the BYU's Marriott School of Business and author of Crucial Conversations: Tools for Talking When Stakes Are High (2002) and Crucial Confrontations: Tools for Resolving Broken Promises, Violated Expectations, & Bad Behavior, he describes MBA programs as brutal coliseums of cut-throat competition. Not exactly the image I infer from current MBA students at most top schools, but there is no question that he has good advice on communications and disagreement without devastating the other party. I wonder what current MBA students think of his critique.
- The MP3 file from the MBA BlastOff MBA admissions teleseminar should be up by Tuesday at the latest. If you haven't yet signed up, please do so that you will have access to the MP3 when it is available.
