Yale College Application Volume Soars

Yale College announced record application volume this Friday — just as its major competitors Harvard, Princeton, Brown, and Dartmouth did earlier.

Yale received 25,925 applications — a 13.6% increase over last year. 5,557 applied early action and 20,368 applied regular decision. Dean of Undergraduate Admissions Jeff Brenzel attributed the increase to Yale’s new financial aid policy (announced last spring) and improved marketing.

Other highlights:

  • 742 early admissions applicants were admitted in December resulting in a record-low acceptance rate of 13.4%. It rejected 38.3% of early applicants and deferred  47.6% to the regular pool.
  • “Yale will accept between 1,900 and 2,000 applicants overall, Brenzel said, which would produce an acceptance rate between 7.3 and 7.7 percent — a new record for selectivity.”
  • 55% of applicants to the class of 2013 are female.
