The Council of Graduate Schools released today the results of the application phase of its annual survey of international enrollment in US graduate programs. This year’s 2007 International Graduate Admissions Phase I: Applications shows that:
- The total number of applications for admission to American graduate programs received from non-U.S. citizens rose 8% from 2006 to 2007. That gain is less than the previous year’s 12% increase, but encouraging after earlier declines.
- The gains seem concentrated in larger institutions: The ten largest institutions, in terms of total international graduate enrollment, had a 13% increase in total international graduate applications. For example the ten largest institutions participating in the survey experienced a 22% jump in graduate applications from India; institutions outside the 50 largest, on the other hand, reported an 8% drop in applications from India.
- International student application activity has not returned to the levels seen prior to September 11, 2001.
